There’s a new toon on Nickelodeon called Invader Zim. It’s about a reckless alien named Zim who is sent to Earth (as punishment, he wasn’t expected to be heard from again) to prepare it for an invasion by his people. He lives among humans in the guise of a middle school student. If you haven’t seen it yet, give it a try. It’s on Friday nights at 9pm EST. As with most recent Nick toons, the animation is a bit bizarre. Think Nightmare Before Christmas meets Ren and Stimpy. I heard about it via the MST3K Info page. If you liked twisted toons, this is one you should check out.
Note: Not responsible if next episode sucks as is the usual case when I recommend a TV show to someone.
I read something in the paper about the show’s creator, J. Vasquez (I’m not even gonna TRY to spell his first name). He mentioned that, like Zim, he had a hard time fitting in in school, because of his large vocabulary for one thing.
What do I think about the show? I like it! It’s very interesting, with just the right amount of strange humor (like an ice cream truck announcing, “You love ice cream. You cannot live without ice cream. Your existence is meaningless without ice cream.”) and interesting strangeness. I like strange things. And I just love Zim’s extremely stupid robot assistant, GIR.
I think Invader Zim is realy great. If you enjoy that wierd humor then you may want to check out Jhonen Vasquez’s comic books: Jhonny the Homicidal Maniac, Squee, and I Feel Sick. They are filled with wierd and occasionly terribly offensive (but still funny) humor. Vasquez’s art is different from anything else too. If you’re interested check out http://www.slavelabor.com they carry all of Jhonen’s stuff.
Don’t forget to get you’re very own “Spooky: the Thing What Squeeks”. Because after all isnt that what the whole world needs a Goth squeeky toy (I couldn’t seem to get the punctuation right in the last sentence so I just left it out.)
Hey, I’ve got my own official Filler Bunny in its little strange chamber thingy. Its pretty cool, tho the guy I got it from wanted to sell me two, so I could fill one with meat and run it over (his words). Even saw the little bunny for about ten frames in one episode (the advantages of the VCR).
