Iowa Caucuses are underway

He’s not what he used to be it seems. In the 90s, he was on top of the world.

Conventional wisdom gave Hillary the lead from machine politics. They also thought Bernie needed a higher turnout to win. It wasn’t as high as they thought necessary for him but polling shows it was higher for new caucusers and lower for old meaning Bernie turned out the voters. The numbers aren’t all in though, by morning that may mean nothing. I still see Bernie as the clear winner here, moving from pipe dream to real contender status. It just goes to show how far you can get funding your campaign with vacuum cleaner pennies.

Give Bill a break. He just banged a campaign volunteer in the closet.

What about Jefferson County gave Bernie such a large percentage?

Does Hilllary really think Chelsea helps bring in any votes? She’s just her kid and not a very charismatic one either.

Wow. Population 17K people. That would barely be a small town where I live. A county would have 100x that number of people.

And it’s in the top half of counties in Iowa too.

Regarding Bill: perhaps just exhaustion? Dude’s almost 70, bad ticker, going balls out the past several days has to take a toll. I can’t imagine he’s just sitting back and letting things happen. He strikes me as a hands-on kind of campaigner, so even when he’s not out in front of a crowd, he was probably micromanaging shit at this point. Give him a sandwich and a nice comfy bed at the Crowne Plaza Des Moines, and he’ll be feeling like a hundred bucks.

I’ll bet Hillary’s hoping he croaks during the general to bring out the sympathy vote.

Do I understand this correctly? MSN has 670 votes for Clinton and 666 for Sanders?

We, the USof A, are supposed to gleam what from the fact that 1300 people in a fly over state that is ~95% white bread no crust is relevant for a nation of 300+ million that is a hella lot more multicultural? Did I get this much ado about nothing correct?

It’s not votes. It’s “delegate equivalents.” It means that there will be 670 Clinton delegates and 666 Sanders delegates at the state convention that selects delegates to the national convention. Or something like that. Whatever it is, there isn’t any count of votes like there is for the Republicans.

Provided there are no accidents. Suicides. That sort of thing.

Yeah, sort of. But it’s 91% white. Don’t forget that HRC got at least 3 of her “delegate equivalents” by winning coin tosses. And she’s currently leading by 4. She’s lucky.

MSNBC reports that Hillary won three tie-breaker coin tosses to win three of her delegates. Bernie would be up by two right now if those tosses went the other way.

ETA: Not tie-breakers really, extra delegates based on the difference between initial attendance and the number of beans in a jar or something like that.

No you do not understand it correctly, China Guy.

As already noted, those are “state delegate equivalents” - the number of state convention delegates the caucus votes would result in which then gets translated into national delegates. Not vote count. In 2012 239K voted on the D side and the numbers are thought to be higher this time.

Thanks for the corrections all. I am still in the much ado about nothing camp though.

From 538

“They are for county delegates. Those are different, and not nearly as big a deal.”

None of it is a big deal, it just shows how close it is.

Oh, stop it, you! (blush)

MSNBC just admitted they had it wrong. Or right, or something, but not whatever they said to start with.
