iPhone frozen - logo asking to connect to iTunes

So my BIL asked me to help update his iPhone. Logged on to iTunes, got the update inquiry box, clicked on that and it said the update would take 28 minutes

Went and had supper, and then tried the iPhone. My BIL got a text and was responding to it, when the iPhone froze up.

All it shows is the iTunes icon with a mini USB beneath it, with an arrow pointing at the iTune icon. So it wants us to re-connect to iTunes. Tried that and nothing happened

Anyone have any thoughts?

Does iTunes say anything when you connect the phone?

Have you tried a hard reset yet? Won’t erase any data.
