iPod Touch 3rd Gen or 4th Gen?

So, I’m looking at buying an iPod, and I was wondering what the big differences were between the 3rd gen and 4th gen iPod Touches, aside from the relatively minor price diff? Would the differences totally change my world? (My entire experience with iPod Touches consists of playing with a friend’s iPod in a bar from time to time)

I bought a Touch in July, out of necessity (really needed it for a trip I was taking) and I knew something more totally awesome would come out in September.

I was right. Now it has a CAMERA and a MICROPHONE. :smack:

You want 4th Gen for sure.

My mom was insisting that I made a mistake buying a 3rd Gen 2 months ago because she was positive that a 4th gen was coming out and it’d have a camera. Well, she was right. She went out and bought one on Wednesday. I have to say, I really don’t care about the camera. I have a camera. I have a camera phone. I don’t need an MP3 player with a camera.

She said that she likes the microphone on her iPad because she can use it for google searches. Apparently the microphone on the iPod 4th Gen doesn’t work for that yet so she’s mildly annoyed. I don’t need a microphone on my MP3 player, especially not for google searches. I can type faster than my mom can use her voice search most days.

I bought an iPod because my dogs ate my Sansa Fuze and I wanted to replace it with something that would let me use the smaller Audible files. The iPod fit the bill and now I have a shitload of music and 38 audiobooks. Since that’s all I need it for, the 8 gig 3rd Gen works perfectly for me.

What do YOU want it for?

It also has a retina display which dwarfs ever other display on the market by so much it’s not funny.

Mostly just internetting and generally tooling around when I’m away from the dorm. I’d probably put a few games on it, maybe even some movies, but it’s rare for me to just sit somewhere and watch a movie. I have a pretty short attention span these days it seems.

My mom insisted that I look at her iPod when I ran into her yesterday. She kept telling me how amazing the display is.
I think I discovered why it is that I have such a hard time taking my vision tests. I honestly couldn’t see a difference between the 3rd and 4th gen. I’m absolutely not saying there isn’t a difference. I just can’t see it.

Hey if you decide to go with a 3rd gen, send me a PM. I could sell my very lightly used 32GB one to you at a discount, then buy myself a 4th gen.

Actually, right now it’s looking like I might buy a not-so-gently used one from a co-worker (she dropped it and cracked the screen. Otherwise it still seems to work). I’ll let you know how that goes.

Every now and then I’m tempted to get an iPod Touch myself. And then I start doing some research and fairly quickly run across something like this:

A long and detailed 1-star review of IPod Touch (3rd generation) at cnet reviews

And then I decide I don’t really want an Ipod so much after all.

Not all of his complaints seemed terribly coherent. What’s with the bit about playing music on a stereo with the USB? I always just use a double-ended speaker cord if I’m going to connect an MP3 player to a stereo, but then, I’ve been doing that for a while. I guess iPods can connect to some stereos with the USB cord?

Wow…mine is honestly gently used (as in less than 50 hours used), not broken LOL

But cool, the offer stands.

Cool beans.
