iPod Touch synch problem

When I connect my old iPod Touch to my MacBook Pro running 10.11.6 OS X El Capitan, iTunes tells me ‘iTunes could not connect to iPod Touch “[Johnny L.A.]” because an invalid response was received from the device’.

I originally had it synched with my PowerBook G4. I tried synching on that computer, and it said that my iPod is synched with another computer and it can only be synched with one computer. I tried shutting off the Bluetooth connection between the computers. I tried different USB ports. I tried rebooting the iPod. No joy.

Help?

Looks like a bug in El Cap, fixed in Mohave: Richard's Tech Reviews: iPod Touch 2nd generation not supported under iTunes 12.8 or later

Sounds like I’m SOL, unless I get a newer-generation iPod (4th gen? 5th? 6th?)

Someone is going to ask why I don’t just use my iPhone. The iPhone won’t download all of the songs that are on iTunes. Also, I can’t attach my iPhone to the radio on my desk at work.

You could upgrade your MacBook to Mojave (if it will go that far), and see if that fixes the issue.

If you can’t update to Mojave, you should try downloading the latest version of iTunes for El Capitan here.

The version of Mojave/iTunes that fixed the problem looks like it was released in December, whereas the latest iTunes for El Capitan was released in January, so hopefully the El Cap version fixes the bug, too.

I’ll try updating to Mojave after the next time I back up my computer.
