Arnold, you’re scaring me. I also got a 128 and only had a problem coming up with a reasonable guess to that party question.

As for how I answered them…

    Guess I got this one wrong. I came up with Guiana, not Iguana. I knew it wasn’t a country, but given that it’s not any of the others, that was the closest thing, so I picked it.

    I see that inertia says this should be nest, but I don’t agree. A hanger is in a closet and a tree is in a forest. Although a nest is in a tree, that’s a reverse relationship to the question asked.

    Another one where my thinking was different than inertia’s. I’m probably wrong though. I figured neither an ovum or a sperm were enough in and of themselves to grow into a human, as a seed is enough to grow into a plant. The only one that could be “planted” and grow to become a human is an embryo.

Ok, I’m done. Now my eyes hurt. I should have worn my glasses. I got a 120. I have a problem, because I abolutely hate math (and suck at it), and word problems. So, combine that, with my poor eyes, and I think I could have scored a 130 on a good day.

BTW, Munich is the only one that’s not a capital.

I got a 128 on the emode test. This is really different than my scores on other IQ tests. (I’m not saying in which direction :)!)

It seems to be a very badly designed test–too many reasonable alternate answers.

Just for the record, I, too, think that Nina should pay half the cost for the whole ski trip. The implication is that she would not have been able to go at all unless he rented the car. Therefore, they should split the cost evenly. So, either the question is flawed, or Nina really is a cheap jerk and Simon should dump her and find a girlfriend who has her own car.

Well, you never know. Perhaps Nina is only going on the ski trip as a favor to Simon. Perhaps she doesn’t even like skiing, but Simon begged and pleaded until she gave in, on the condition that she only had to pay a third or a fourth of the total cost (because she’s trying to pay off a student loan and credit card debt and Simon knows she’s watching every penny) plus in exchange, he has to attend a musical with her next week.

Why, no, no one’s even commented that I have an overactive imagination before. Why do you ask? :wink:

Hm. I got 126 on the emode test and 160 on the iqtest test. Something I noticed about the latter test, though, is it doesn’t take the age into consideration since I’m over 16…

I had fun playing with my age though. If I were seven, I’d have an IQ of 222.

Another chance to show off with a long-winded response. I know how much you all (or y’all for us southerners) look forward to it. :wink:

I got a 128 on the emode one, 156 on the other one. That one ranks high. Everyone I’ve asked about it has scored incredibly high, I have not heard of anyone making below 130 on it. I have a book of IQ tests I bought a while back and took a few. Averaged 130. It was a little lower the first couple times, a little higher after I figured out a couple of the patterns to some of the questions.

The only one that left me stumped was the business people question (#23).

#2 is hard. I put country because of Guiana, so didn’t get Iguana. Thing is, there is a country Guyana, and a French Guiana, but no Guiana. Grrrr. (They’re both in South America next to Venezuela.)

I agree with Shayna on 11. An embryo is a fertilized human seed.

26 is confusing - I said milkshake as a mix, but agree water as the pure chemical would be equally valid.

27 agree with steamboat.

Don’t know how I missed 32. Copernicus. How the flip did I confuse that with Columbus? Mind outrunning my reading?

51 was a bad question. Deer? Oh, four letters. I picked horse, because it’s the domesticated animal (even though there are wild horses.) But afterwards I thought eland, because it’s the only one that starts with a vowel. So there. Then there’s the striped zebra. That’s at least four valid ways to answer that question - bad question.

52 is also a bad question. How do you decide “equitable”? I got it right that they wanted by mileage, but that’s a lousy question. Thanks to Kat for pointing out other ways to interpret Nina’s motivations.

SqrlCub, how old are you? The IQ test used to be figured differently, based on “mental age” vs. “physical age”. That was how Marilyn Vos Savant got rated so smart - she was a kid who scored high. Then they changed the way it’s calculated to a statistical basis, so you can’t earn numbers that high any more. Another reason to see the iqtest page scores high. It’s statistically meaningless to assign a score much above 150 or so. That change in method of calculation may be why your scores varied so widely. Or else it’s the drugs.

Actually, it was pretty typical for standard IQ tests, at least in format. They usually use a lot of word and number manipulation tricks, comparisons and sequencings, math operations looking for patterns, etc. Also visual pattern recognition methods, such as the ones shown. I’ve also seen deconstructing solid images. Take a cube with different patterns on each face. Then have a bunch of flat layouts with the patterns scrambled and pick the one with the correct arrangement to make that cube. The basis of all of this is pattern recognition - different types of cognative skills. That makes it bad when they give a poor question. Creative people also have difficulty because they can see more ways to answer. And as stated in the answer summary, this tests certain type of IQ, not the whole being. It doesn’t measure emotional development, or artistic skill, or creativity, etc.

130 on emode (which sounds about right, but then again, I easily got practically every question. Not a hard test, IMO.)
I eventually put “Deer” because of the way it’s spelled (4 letters and no vowels separated by consonants) but wasn’t sure about domestic elands (They’re “easily tamed” sez a quote in the Dictionary. Yes, I looked it up while mulling the test question.)

Oh yeah. I had Nina pay 1/4 of the cost, but thought she should’ve paid 1/2.
Stuff like that. At least I know Fibonacci sequences, square/odd-number relationships, and x(x+1) series by heart! That helped a lot!

I am 25 as of this past Saturday. When I was in elementary and middle school I kept skipping grades. (That is why I had to take the IQ test in the first place.) Anyway, everytime I lived with my father I skipped grades and then when I lived with my mother she put me back in the age appropriate grade. (For the record, when I lived in Japan and went to a private Baptist military school I skipped 5 grades and in California I skipped three grades.)

I understand how the current IQ tests are calculated and have taken several different home ones over the last several years. They have tended to score at the top of the charts generally, but like I said there were also the tests that have been on the lower end. I said it earlier and say it again, an IQ test does not accurately show a person’s IQ, it only shows that they can take that style of test well.

I got 125. Aced the visual stuff (my strong point) and the next-in-series questions, but got my ass kicked by the word scrambles. Anyone who has seen the numerous typos in practically all of my posts will understand why.

I picked zebra. It’s striped.

I then smoked some crack, and picked snail. I was thinking it was the only critter that was mainly land-based, confusing turtle with tortouse (sp?).

I’m going back to my fingerpaints now. I’ll try that other IQ test tomorrow.

I must hold my head in shame. I only go 118 on the emode test. This is pretty close to the score I got on a similar test years ago (120). Bleck.

The Controversial answers…

Milkshake (substantially different flow rate/consistency). I like water as the only basic liquid.

Car I still don’t know why. If they used Airliner one could say that Car is the only (primarily) single passenger vehicle, but I liked Steamboat (no wheels).

The Gatekeeper question’s answer is incorrectly scored as False when it is Neither. The circles (sets) can be arranged in a line or an overlapping triangle.

Embryo- seed becomes plant, embryo becomes human (I’m not opening the Abortion/Right to Life debate here).

Electricity makes the coffee maker go, but I could argue that my campfire coffee maker doesn’t use electricity…

Deer 4 letters

20 Simon travels 200 km Nina travels 100 km , total is 300. She travels 1/3 and pays 1/3. I don’t like this one either. Pure Math says he pays 100 % of 100 km (that he drives alone) and 50% of 100 km he drives with her. She pays the other 50% of 100 km so 15 would be appropriate. If it was me I’d make her pay $30 since I rented the car, picked her up, and drove the whole damn time.

This is an “IF-THEN” statement. In statements of the form IF A THEN B, B must be a necessary and inescapable conclusion of A, or the statement as a whole is conclusively false. That’s how if-thens work. So this statement is definitively FALSE.

Question 20, Plant is to Seed as Human is to:
Ovary - Sperm - Ovum - Uterus - Embryo
The answer is Embryo. A seed is indeed fertilized. (Pollen is the equivalent of sperm, and the plant equivalent of an ovum is called simply the gametophyte; the analog of the ovary is the ovule, and different plants have different types of analogs to the uterus).

Question 23 (the business people with cell phones, pagers, etc.) is a little tricky. The insight is that we want to maximize the set of people who lack at least one of the items. So we should assume that there is NO OVERLAP in the sets of people who lack each particular item. That way, we can add them together, subtract from the total number of people, and the group (of ten) we are left with is the smallest possible group possessing all of the items.

is terribly open to different EQUALLY valid correct answers. I’m a biochemist, and thinking of these things on the molecular level, water is the correct answer as the only pure substance and that’s what I put, although Milkshake FEELS acceptible as an answer for some reason I can’t quite specify. Maybe because it’s lumpy.

Question 27, Which one of the following five is least like the other four?
Airplane - Car - Bus - Train - Steamboat,
is also ambiguous. Only the steamboat lacks wheels, but only the airplane travels on the z axis. Two equally valid responses.

On question 30, Which one of the following five is least like the other four?
Think - Speak - Write - Call - Listen,
am I the only one who put “listen”? The rest are active verbs, while listening is passive. Why should the answer be “think”, as some of you have said?

Question 43, **A car is to gas as coffee maker is to:
Water - Coffee - Electricity - Warming plate - Plastic **
gave me pause. On the one hand, gas is the fuel of a car, so electricity should be the answer. On the other hand, gas is the liquid you put in the device to make it do what you want it to do, so water should be the equivalent for a coffee maker. Neither of these choices is logically superior in any a priori way that I can see. It comes down to guessing what the test-maker INTENDED you to see. For some reason I can’t put words to, I instinctively know that I was SUPPOSED to think in terms of fuel to make test-man happy. This is why I have always “tested well”; realizing that I lean on this instinct is also why I don’t put a lot of stock in tests like this.

Question 51, **Which one of the following five is least like the other four?
Horse - Zebra - Deer - Moose - Eland **
is the worst question on the test. Elands, deer, and palomino horses all have distinctive coat markings, so I don’t see why stripes should set zebras aside. More sensibly, the horse is the only domesticated species on the list, as has been mentioned. However, the moose is the only one on the list that does not live in herds. These seem to me to be two equally valid criteria for choosing two different answers. Since I don’t know what test-man wanted here, I’m at a loss. As for the number of letters in the name “deer”, or something that has to do with the words themselves rather than their meanings, that is just simply the stupidest basis for an intelligence test question that I can possibly imagine, and if that’s what was intended it alone is enough to invalidate the whole thing as far as I’m concerned.
