Didja think I was gonna hang myself for littering?
My tradition is to start paying attention about a week before Thanksgiving, to see if I will catch it on the radio. When I do hear it, I will smile a gentle and radiant smile of warm familiarity. Then after about four minutes I remember just how interminably long it is, and switch the channel.
Later in the evening I will google up the lyrics, and read the last ten verses or so, just for closure.
I thought you all might find this interesting. It purports to be the newspaper report form the original incident:
It’s that time again! I’ll be out of town this year and don’t know if I’ll get to hear about the massacree on the radio but I know I’ll be thinking of Arlo when we sit down to our feast.
In Portland it will play at noon PST on KISN 95.1 FM.
edited to add: And this website has a pretty good list of stations that will be playing it this year.
We’re listening to it right now. It’s a Thanksgiving tradition that can’t be beat!
This will be the 39th year in a row for me. Wouldn’t miss it. Got to see Arlo do it several times, one time it was about a 15,000 part harmony. I’ll jump in next time it comes around…
I wake up before everyone else and I’ll play it while doing prep. Today I learned I can peel 10 pounds of Yukon golds during the song.

Amazingly, I heard the whole thing yesterday, without even really trying.
I had to work yesterday – put in 10 hours – just as I was leaving the parking lot to head home, it started up on the local oldies station. I’ve got about a ten minute commute that I stretched out to fifteen or so just so I could join the kids on the Group W bench.
(I caught the last few bars sitting in my car in the garage)
So we’ll wait till it comes around again, and this time with four part harmony and feeling
That’s a useful talent. I got my brother-in-law to cook Thanksgiving dinner. That’s my useful talent.
About an hour from now it’s coming back around on the guitar…
Already listened to it, a bit early, a few minutes ago ! Thanks for the reminder!
Ok…here it comes…
You can get anything you want…
Just finished listening to it with the Missus and a finely rolled joint.
Forgot to play it earlier, but listener currently.
Heard it twice today. Now I will be humming it for a week. Love Arlo!
Thanks for the reminder. I’m still cleaning up so I think it counts even though it’s after midnight…
So did they play it this year? We’re in Florida this Thanksgiving. (I live in northern Calvert County, comfortably inside their broadcast radius.)
At Alice’s restaurant. Exceptin’ Alice.
