Is anyone else having this one weird problem with the SDMB.....

Today, for no reason that I can identify, my scroll wheel has stopped working on the boards. I am using Chrome and my scroll wheel works on every other tab I have open. I logged off the Dope and closed the tab, opened a new one and logged back on. No dice: no scroll wheel.

However it works fine if I open the Dope in a Firefox session.

Any ideas?

This has been happening to me lately too, also on Chrome, but I don’t think it’s exclusively on the SDMB (although perhaps it is, I can’t recall for certain). It seems connected to the particular tab for me, though. If I copy the URL and paste it into a fresh tab, scrolling works fine there. Haven’t figured out what’s triggering it.

Yep, me too. Chrome seems to be rife with possibilities for websites to break it.

Even weirder. That works. And I end up with one not scrolling tab and one that does scroll ???

That’s one weird trick.

Google Chrome coders must hate you.

It has happened to me intermittently for the past five years or so. Typically it’s just a thread here or there, and other open SD threads will still scroll (and yes, this problem is exclusive to this website for me). So… is it a few threads or all of them, OP?

It was every thread as far as I could see and the fora themselves. Even in the window typing a response I couldn’t scroll up and down with the wheel. But as I indicated Mnemnosyne’s solution worked like a charm.

It kind of amazes me how much Chrome will allow websites to affect its operation. For a long time I was having a problem on The Truth About Cars where- right as the page finished loading- Chrome’s scroll bars would disappear leaving the page stuck in place. You could click on links and everything, but couldn’t scroll the page using any method. It took them a long time to track down the cause, some ad with scripts in it was mucking everything up.

Seriously, though, what train of thought would lead developers to think allowing websites to do this kind of thing is a good idea?

I use Chrome and don’t have that problem. Logitec mouse, W10.

Yes, it just started happening to me too. Safari user. I didn’t post because I thought my computer just hiccuped. I started a new tab and all was well.

I also had trouble clicking on any of the links or buttons. “Quote” for example, I clicked on it, but nothing happened. It was like the entire page was inert.

I’m going to move this to ATMB, although it’s hard to tell if it’s a SDMB-specific thing or browser type of problem.

It was happening to me yesterday, but it’s ok today. WIN 10, Chrome. Logitech mouse.

I’m Windows 7 Professional, Logitech wireless M185. I don’t think it has ever happened before yesterday. Well not that I’ve noticed.

Agreed. Not before yesterday. No sign today.

I don’t think it’s a specific browser issue, since numerous browsers are mentioned. I suppose we just need to track repeats and see if we can find a pattern or connection. If it happens again, I’ll make note of the time and post it here.

Quick question: do those complaining have adblock? I could see a rogue ad causing a problem like this. It could be capturing the scroll events. There are legitimate reasons to do this, like if you want to roll your own fancier scroll effect. But ads usually use it to make you see their ad and not scroll past it. If you can’t click links, there may even be an invisible overlay that’s getting in the way.

I do notice that some of you are Members, but it’s possible some of the code is still running. (I do know that some tracking stuff still runs even for members.) It’s just an idea.

Yes I use uBlock Origin.

No, no adblock.
