When I am on one of the main forum pages, I can use my scroll wheel. When I enter a thread, the scroll wheel doesn’t work - I have to click and hold on the scroll bar and move it up and down to scroll up and down. The scroll wheel also works on the Reply page.
I am using Internet Explorer and Windows 7. I am a Charter Member so I don’t see ads, and the tab doesn’t show that the page is loading.
Huh. All I can think of would be some script from an ad blocking the scroll wheel events. I know they shut off the visible ads, but I do think some of the scripts still run.
Could you try an experiment? Try turning off JavaScript and see if that works around the scroll problem. If so, then there is definitely some script messing up your ability to scroll.
If that does work, then it’s only a matter of figuring out what script is causing the problem.
I’m currently getting an ultra-aggressive ad that snatches everything back up to its display at the top of the page.
Notable in this context for being worse than previous such intrusive ads, because of how it overrides the scroll bar. With previous incarnations of such ads, if you kept the scroll bar pressed you could at least force the browser to remain where you wanted it to. The new one overrides even that. It simply doesn’t allow you to read the rest of the page at all.
I’d identify the ad, but it always seems to read “Ad starts in 43s” or whatever. So it’s not even working on the level of getting eyeballs on their message.
Not much to go on, but I’ve reported what info you were able to give to our admins. Hopefully they can trace down the bad ad and get rid of it.
ETA: Sometimes, these actually aren’t bad ads. I don’t recall the exact details, but the issue is that some ads use a feature that some browsers do not interpret correctly, which can cause this scrolling issue. I don’t recall which browsers are affected.
FWIW, I’m using Microsoft Edge with no ad blocker from the UK. (Largely on the basis that I’ve thirty years experience of ignoring online ads and any nasty side-effects of them beyond that shouldn’t be my problem to solve.)
There’s a Thomson Cruises ad that’s been pretty aggressive today, but that’s not the really bad one. Which as I said, I’ve never seen identify itself.
