I hear you. I normally tell people to use Messenger if they want to text me. I get so many regular texts mostly from political campaigns that if anyone I actually know wanted to text me that way, their message would be lost in the confusion.
That makes little sense to me. Why would Facebook’s internal security systems, presumably walled off from the outside-facing web, be affected by DNS problems?
Just before I started having issues with Facebook, I noticed them with Flickr. Flickr never went down AFAIK, but I noticed that video clips wouldn’t load. Whatever that problem was, it was soon fixed.
Hmm, the ones I was checking a few hours ago are now working. Seems to be only FB now.
I noticed it first when some services like the store on my Oculus Quest stopped working. They still seem to be down though the installed apps like Youtube seem to be working fine and can connect to the Internet.
Fascinating story. I would not have believed that a company as large as Facebook would experience something like this unless it was some hugely sophisticated cyber-attack. But at least as now the cause appears to be linked to an update in something called the Border Gateway Patrol.
This raises some larger regulatory questions too. Companies like Facebook along with Microsoft, Amazon,Google and Apple are now so large that they can be considered part of the infrastructure of modern life. There is definitely a public interest in minimizing the likelihood of future outages and it will be interesting to see what the US and other governments will do about it.
The scammers that use WhatsApp and IG for their primary communications with their victims must be having a bad day.
Heh. I thought it was just me. I picked up a three day ban earlier today.
99% of my Facebook time is on Groups, the most important of which is a group devoted to ancient comic strips. The guys there post new material everyday that is unavailable anywhere else. Skeezix is having trouble with his girlfriend, and Alley Oop has commandeered a pirate ship. I can’t be left hanging.
It’s working okay for me now.

Just tested on my phone, based on some tweets I saw, Instagram is back, as is the standalone Messenger app. No idea about WhatsApp as I’ve never used it. the main FB site is still out though.
