Is Anyone Reading Joss Whedon's 'Fray?'

This is a comic book from Dark Horse, set in the same world as Buffy, but set a couple of hundred years from now in a hi-tech but ruined dystopia.

Melaka Fray, a street urchin in the remains of New York, has just been called to be the next Slayer. This is remarkable, because no Slayer has been called since the mid-21st century.

No Slayer has been called because something tremendous happened in the 21st Century and as a result all vampires and demons were gone from Earth.

Melaka has now been called because somehow, the beasties are back. No one remembers the word “vampire,” so they’re called “lurks.”

The Watchers Council has mutated into a crazy suicide cult. Melaka’s Watcher found her, told her she’s the Slayer, then immolated himself.

We’re three issues into the book’s 8-issue run. I rather like it; it’s nice to have a third regular Joss fix, and I like how it’s contributing to the mythology and making vague, tantalizing references to Buffy’s exploits.

Is anyone else reading it?

You betcha.

I understand that this is the first of several limited series comics, detailing adventures of Slayers in different times and circumstances. I can’t wait.

Lots of fodder here, from one of the most inventive minds going.

So far, I’m happy with the art, too. That has varied a lot with the Dark Horse comics, so I am particularly grateful. (Is this Dark Horse? I think it is…)

Oooh… not reading it, but would like to. Generally I’m not a comic reader (hence my complete lack of knowledge about it!) but I like the idea of exploring the Buffyverse. I cannot believe I never started watching the show until a couple weeks ago on FX.

Rosebud, if you want to read Fray you can probably find it at Jim Hanley’s Universe in Manhattan. The first issue disappeared too-quickly from the shelves, because it was mentioned in TV Guide a week before it came out. But it was reprinted, so you should be able to find all three.

Let me know if you can’t and I’ll try to scrounge them for you, as I am your humble servant.
