I’d love to move to Canada - probably had the chance while my grandmother was still alive, but I’ve looked into it, and I don’t have the skill set that they want, and I’m not a millionaire.
I occasionally fantasize of moving to South or Central America, but I’d seriously need to bone up on my Spanish skills. I can read and comprehend a lot, but can’t speak for shit.
I’m not sure what you actually meant by this, but I can certainly see how it could be construed, and it ain’t good. I would suggest you back up, consider how rather horribly this could be taken, and me a little more careful about this sort of thing. No warning issued.
Seriously? Some people are so uncomfortable with the state of affairs as to contemplate moving away? What do you expect to find on the other side? Ease of employment? equal access to affordable housing, healthcare options, a better education? Better bunkers, and MRE’s?
Don’t expect to return once you abandon your place.
A lot of people who talk about emigrating to Canada or Europe severely underestimate the difficulty; as the article points out, “we tend to talk like the hardest part is buying the plane ticket.”
I doubt that there are all that many people who actually think it would be easy. Most of those would be the people who tell use to “love it or leave it”.
What’s odd is, if I wanted to go to a country that had high taxes, social programs, and a UHC, I’d have to jump through every hoop in the world to do so. If I wanted to go to a country that has a weak central government, no community assistance, and no taxes to speak of, it would be easy.
I mean, really, in the “love it or leave it” camp, it really seems that it should be those who want to emulate a country with lower barriers to immigration who leave it.
The above is rumps greatest hopes. He even has his own army loyal to him & him alone to snuff out the protesters while denouncing the election process.
The Republican party has been conned and America will suffer the consequences while the dumpo play golf
I don’t believe that the US Army would support a coup. They are taught that they defend the USA and constitution rather than a political side.
I you mean his base with scary looking rifles, they wouldn’t stand against the National Guard.
I’m in my mid-50’s. Despite having wide work experience, good health, and willingness to work even at menial labor to pay for my keep AND I have usable French… I do not qualify for emigration. Largely because I’m over 50 and there are a lot of people willing to do even menial work for their keep.
Unless opportunity opens up for those simply seeking asylum and I qualify as oppressed enough (which, honestly, at this point I don’t) I’m stuck here. The only other possible option would be Israel… if they deem me Jewish enough and if the US goes down the toilet I have strong doubts that Israel would be even as safe as that.
Nope, I don’t see having a choice. Once the walls go up and the rest of the world isolates the US I’ll be on the wrong side of the fence.
Trump & Co. are making it VERY clear that they only consider “the right people” to be Americans. The rest are just dirt to be crushed underfoot.
Hell yes, I’m contemplating a possible escape - those of my family that didn’t do exactly that in the 1930’s are now residing on the ashpiles in places like Auschwitz. I can learn from their mistakes.
No, I expect poverty, hardship, and disdain from the natives of wherever I land up… but I’ll have a chance at life. If I’m the wrong end of the oligarchs and autocrats I won’t have even that.
Oh, don’t worry - if it gets that bad I’ll have no intention of returning. Why would I want to? Why would I want a “place” as a despised serf fearing that my group will be the next to be declared “enemy of the state”?
I haven’t moved or really made any concrete plans to do so, but if I did, the rationalization would be knowing that I’m not paying income taxes to support a government that represents the interests of billionaires and is no longer interested reinvesting my taxes for people like me. The American in me comes to the conclusion that I work hard for my money, and I hate the thought that I’m just pissing it away to help an elite class deprive me of civil liberties, economic opportunities, and standard of living. I can do that and pay a hell of a lot less in living costs in some developing country.
If you save your money and spread out your risks to protect yourself against currency collapses or collapses in the market, you could find places where your money would go a long way. Some countries like Panama apparently even offer you a pension if you’ve been there long enough.
“Yeah but there’s violent crime” - like there’s not in America? I hear of muggings and stabbings in the developing world. The occasional abduction for ransom. But not too many mass shootings or shooting a neighbor over some HOA dispute.
“Well there’s discrimination” - Okay so I finally feels what it’s like not to have the benefit of whiteness.
I was not referring to the “army”. There are private military groups that are being paid through US tax dollars like ICE and those unidentified armored units that broke up the public crowds last week. Even today we don’t know who they were or why they were there
Right, so it sounds like people that want to live in a country with a weak government and maximum freedoms to its people should have plenty of options to choose from.
It should be the ones who want to live in a poorly run country that can go live in a poorly run country. If they do that, then the rest of us can get to fixing this one up, rather than trying to find a well run country to take us in.
If there were not constant vandals to our society, we could make this a pretty nice place.
I try not to live in the world of “should.” It would be nice if we didn’t have these teeming millions of ignorant fucks ruining the country, but they are. I’ve tried being patient and tried participating in the system. I’ve tried having thoughtful conversations and meaningful exchanges of ideas, only to realize that we live in a world in which millions of people believe in a deep state-run pedophile ring.
I don’t like thinking about what would be nice or they way it oughtta be. I try to live in the world and in the reality as I perceive it, and right now, the reality is that America’s turning itself into a shithole. Like others, I am not always in a position to vote with my feet, and options can become more limited with age and circumstances.
I don’t think America will end. I also don’t think it will ever solve some of its major problems (guns, healthcare) and it seems like it’s on a bad trajectory and unlikely to reach the EU standard of living in my lifetime. I got out for other reasons, and via the easy option of Canadian heritage citizenship, but I am very glad that I did.
