Oh, Christ, I try and go Garbo and feel sorry for myself and sulk, and you sonsobitches have to be nice and cheerful and supportive . . .
The colored photo of the Castles is from the frontispiece of a 1915 etiquette book (they were trying to make nightclubbing respectable). The photo of me is a snapshot (unretouched!) taken last month, in a c1933 silk-chiffon gown and Grandmother’s Good Pearls. And three and a half pounds of makeup.
Gotta get back to work, I have an even dozen Encyclopedia Americana entries to write this week–just got Claude Rains done, on to Dennis Potter (yes, I know neither of them are “Americana”).
As for my poor Mom . . . well, it’s a horrible, horrible situation, but it’s something we middle-aged people go through: our parents get old and sick and die, and we have to do whatever we have to do to take care of them. My father, lucky bastard, keeled over of a quick heart attack, and I plan to take after him.
Now I can officially thank Q.E.D. for his swift, efficient and artistic help with updating my web site.
You said you don’t want any “hugs”. But can I just wish you well, and say I miss your celebrity obit links?
Oh, I knew about that one, but a few weeks ago, she was asking for help designing a new one. I thought maybe it was already online.
Ah, no, not yet. I know the one you mean, then. We’ve discussed it, and she won’t be ready to start getting it set up until probably sometime next year. Plus, she found someone had already done what she had planned on doing (curses!!), so the plan has changed a bit, too.
I’m glad you’re all right, Eve. You’re one of a handful of posters I’ve been wondering, “Where’re they at?” this past month. Your participation is missed.
Eve, a full time job with work on the side, plus school, plus taking care of an aging parent, wow! That’s a lot of stuff to deal with. I went through the aging parent thing with my father. He had alzheimer’s plus a lot of related physical problems and died in April. I wish you strenght and peace in dealing with this and, for what it’s worth, if you need to vent, ramble or whatever about dealing with your mother, my email address is in my profile.
Take care of yourself too, ok?
