Is Floyd Mayweather going to be Undefeated

I like boxing. I don’t know all the statistics and what not but I enjoy a good fight. I really don’t like Floyd’s antics , but, he is simply the best. The last “countdown” I watched was him and Victor Ortiz. Among the many disturbing things I picked up, was Floyed sincerely contemplating with his uncle how many more fights he had in him.

So obviously he is thinking about retiring. He is set to fight Robert Guerrero on May 4. Again, I don’t get to watch boxing as much as I would like but this guy isn’t in Floyd’s league. And since manny got knocked out, it’s doubtful if they will ever fight.

With a amount of worthy opponents quickly disappearing will Floyd Mayweather have an undefeated career?

It just depends on how long he keeps boxing. Many fighters could have retired undefeated after long careers, but for one reason or another they want to keep fighting, and eventually were defeated. Floyd has already slowed down a little, but he’s also become a better fighter. As long as he continues to pick his opponents well, which is what’s got him to this point as an undefeated fighter so far, then he can continue his career and still retire undefeated.

However, many fighters have turned old overnight. The next one may be the one where he suddenly discovers his body won’t work the way he wants it to anymore. I don’t know what his current money situation is, but I think with what he’s making he ought to have enough to retire on quite well, and if retiring undefeated was that important to him, he would have done it by now.

I’m pretty sure he’s like the highest paid athlete right now. He deff has the money. I think it’s an ego thing. But I’m starting to worry for his legacy. The ego is never satisfied.

I’d think it likely. He’s a very careful fight picker - Pacquiao aside you wouldn’t say he ducked people exactly, just made sure the fights were on his terms. When he finally does become vulnerable I think it unlikely that he’d take on anyone who could exploit that.

Tripolar makes an excellent point though - you can grow old very quickly in the boxing ring. Remember RJJ? Another famously cautious fight picker who faded badly over the course of just two fights (with Tarver) when he was effectively undefeated at the time - also younger at the time then Floyd is now.

You know, RJJ was in prominence during a time where I was pretty young. So while I couldn’t keep UP with boxing, I knew that he was supposedly great because he was pretty much a fixture in popular culture.

But by the time I could investigate myself…he was almost “washed up”. I always wondered what in the devil happened to him. Just two fights wiped him out eh…hm

He was old. He also had gained weight and then lost it so he could win a marginal heavyweight title. By the time that was over he had slowed down a lot. A guy like Jones who depends on unusual speed and agility is kind of vulnerable once he slows down, and unlike Mayweather, Jones was so superior to all his competition that he hadn’t really worked up a sweat for a fight in years.
