Is it me, or does the New Orleans gameplan seem to be "injure Favre"?

Title says it all.

Join us in the playoff thread.

No, I think Favre’s being hit as much as any NFL quarterback. They all get put on the turf multiple times a game, let along the odd sack.

It’s just that he’s 40, has only been able to play for the past few years because of all the “vitamins” he injects into his ass, and is a frail as an aluminum pop can. So it looks worse and he takes longer to get up.

He’s a pretty tuff aluminum can. Started 309 games in a row. Playing hurt tonight.

But, I agree–it’s just normal play, nothing specifically targeted at Farve.

True. Just the usual, but he’s proving that he can still hang tough with the young 'uns.

Absolutely! The Cobra Ki don’t mind playing dirty…

“Sweep the leg, Johnny!”

Maybe they should just put flags on the QBs from now on.

Before the Dallas game, I heard some of the commentators say that part of Dallas’ game plan was to get to get to Favre early and get him to the turf as much as possible because he can’t take hits like he used to and he would be less effective the rest of the game. This is opposed to concentrating on the run, concentrating on pass protection, or having an even mix. Defenses don’t go after every quarterback this way, they would have limited returns and could get burnt pretty easily. It seemed to me that New Orleans was going out of their way to rough up Favre (which is fine).

Injure Favre? No. Neutralize Favre? Absolutely. And it worked.

… and I was thinking
“Gee, every other QB today has been hit just as hard and just as late after handing off or throwing, yet BrettFarvhe is the only one drawing multiple penalties. Too bad the NFL has hired NBA consultants to put BrhehttFhahrve rules in place.”

That was my thought early in the game – the Saints’ defense was roughing up Favre early and often.

Are you kidding? Brady and Manning both draw penalties like that all the time too. Earlier in the season some commentator was talking about “Roughing the Brady” penalties.

Throughout NFL history, most head coaches have subscribed to the theory that “the opposing quarterback must go down and he must go down hard”. Hurting the opposing quarterback, in a legal manner, is one of the major goals of a defense. And defenses that can’t achieve this don’t win championships.

The Saints also have been one of the most blitzingest teams in the league this season. Nothing surprising here.

That’s two weeks in a row the Saints have been able to put the hurt on the QB.
Are they going to be able to put the K-O on Manning? How does Manning respond to going down hard multiple times?

He doesn’t perform well. Unfortunately for the Saints, it ain’t easy to do. However, you can find a good example of how he performs by viewing yesterday’s 1st quarter and the 2005 divisional championship vs. the Steelers.

But you have to get to him consistently and get him moving out of the pocket to quickly. Much easier said than done.

And thanks to Gregg Williams, we know for sure…

“I sure hope so and I am not going to apologize for it either. You kill the head and the body will die. That’s usually how it goes, you hit the quarterback and the whole team feels it. We are hoping to continue it this week. You know this guy (Peyton Manning) has a great clock in his head. The big thing is he throws the ball so early that we are going to have to do a good job of finding ways to get to him. And when we do get to him, we are going to make sure to have a couple of remember me shots on him when we get there.

Awww c’mon J J, you know football better than that. Name me one defensive coordinator in the NFL, college, and high school ranks who would say that disrupting the QB isn’t part of their game plan? Williams, one of the most respected DCs in the NFL, is advocating “Remember Me” hits. Point to me where he said he wants late hits, illegal hits, purposefully-injure-the-other-player hits; give us a quote or a soundbite - - not quoted out of context - - to support your position.

If you’re going by the furor generated by the recent interviewWilliams did with 104.5 radio in Nashville, I recommend you listen to the interview and get Williams in context. Mike Floriodid a hatchet job on Williams yesterday; Tony Kornheiserdid also on ESPN. To get to their positions, (and to boost their hits and to stir crap and to confuse the ignorant) Florio and Kornheiser both willfully and purposefully quoted Williams out of context.

Don’t be one of the sheeple. Listen for yourself.

I’m not sure what you believe I’m attempting to say here. I’m just following-up on my Post 13 in this thread, with something from “the horse’s mouth”. In no way do I believe that Williams was trying to imply that he would ask his players to do anything blatantly illegal or anything to permanently harm Manning. “Remember me” shots are those that test the boundaries, and every defensive coordinator understands this. And with all the rules protecting QB’s today, I think Williams’ comments and beliefs would be unanimous with DC’s.

Sorry for the confusion. Lots of media have picked up on this and even local New Orleans stations are saying that Williams says he wants his guys to hurt Manning. I thought this was another case.
