This is the stuff I’ve seen him in so far (off the top of my head)–
Girls: Sure Hannah is the biggest asshole of the whole series, but Adam is the worst asshole boyfriend ever.
This Is Where I Leave You: Had to look up the name of the movie because the main thing I remember about it was that Philip was an immature asshole and his sister, Tina Fey, should have let him rot.
Marriage Story: Holy crap! What a self involved little prick!
Star Wars: Need I explain?
Certainly he’s done some stuff where I don’t wanna kick his character in the balls but I can’t think of any. Give me an Adam Driver hero movie!
My thoughts on Mr. Driver would work well in the Actors that make you not want to see a movie thread, though I wouldn’t avoid a movie just because he’s in it, he doesn’t tend to work on things I’d want to see. If I do see something he’s in, I get distracted by my unreasonable dislike of his face and his whole vibe. Just humorless and taking himself too seriously.
To be fair, I was pleasantly surprised by his hosting of SNL. Maybe I could overlook the things I dislike if he was in a comedic role.
Oh, he’s a very good actor but a good actor can be many different types of people that all do not have to be assholes. He doesn’t seem to be suffering from Hillary Swank disease at least and can not take himself too seriously all the dang time.
Since I haven’t watched the two movies you’ve recommended, I cannot say for sure that they are pretentious acting movies, but the descriptions sure read like they are.
I’m really not sure what your actual question is. Is it, “does Adam Driver ever play anything else but assholes?”, or is it “does Adam Driver ever make any movies I will like him/his character in?” Because your response to @peccavi says it may not be the former, despite the fact that that’s what you asked in your OP.
Which has nothing to do with whether his character is heroic or good or non-asshole-ish in those movies, but sounds like you have no interest in “pretentious acting movies.”
Well, I cannot say any more about any of this since I have not seen either movie. However, I do not think I can be more clearer on what I meant in my OP.
@peccavi gave two possible examples of such movies, but your response to them seemed to dismiss them as “pretentions acting movies,” so it sounds, to me, like you not only want a movie in which Driver does not play an asshole, but it also needs to be not a highly serious or “acting” movie – it seems like you also want a particular kind of movie.
OK. Sorry it wasn’t clear to you. But it’s been, like, 15 minutes since these two films were recommended to me so forgive me if I haven’t watched them yet and can no longer comment on them.
Driver has killed it on Saturday Night Live by leaning hard into his reputation as a Very Serious Actor. The Career Day sketch in particular he says absolutely ridiculous lines (“They placed me in a cast iron pot in a pizza oven. My bones never hardened but my spirit did!”) with complete gravitas and conviction. The effect is absolutely hilarious.
Based on three movies and one television series, confirm or refute the supposition that Adam Driver, an actor with 30+ movie credits and Oscar, Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG, and Tony award nominations, is always cast as “the asshole”,
But don’t use any of the other 27+ movies the OP hasn’t seen, or anything else the OP doesn’t have personal knowledge of?
By the way, to further cement Mr. Drivers reputation, he served in the Marines and (from the Wiki) “Driver is the founder of Arts in the Armed Forces (AITAF), a nonprofit that performs theater for all branches of the military in the United States and abroad.”
