Is it okay for me to wear a black athlete's jersey?

I’ve never been a jersey guy (well, I’m a Jersey guy, but that’s totally different), so I’ve never really had that issue. At my college during basketball season it wouldn’t be weird at all to see White people in a Black guy’s number or vice versa. Never thought twice about it.

Now that I think about it, growing up I had a Tommy Greene jersey. I was neither White nor a pitcher, but I never caught any crap about it.

But what about Negro Leagues gear? Like a Kansas City Monarchs cap or a Homestead Grays shirt?

He’s the racist. Not you.

But what if he has the legs for it? Why the hate, brother. Why the hate?

Nameless jerseys aren’t that hard to come by. Your local sporting goods store should have them with the rest of the jerseys. They even tend to be cheaper.

Personally, I go for balance. I’ve got two wings jerseys: A Shanahan in away colors and a nameless black practice jersey. I used to have a Fedorov jersey in home colors, but I sold it after he left the team. I didn’t like the way he talked about wanting to stay in Detroit and took a deal at Anaheim for less. He also briefly dated Tara Reid.

I have an Athletics one somewhere.

Perhaps I’m trying to be generically male…

I can’t imagine why people would have a problem with a jersey. I’m not the kind of guy to wear them, but if you want one, pick who you want. Going through the NFL Shop, you’ve got a few choices.

  1. Replica jerseys. I’m pretty sure that these are the normal ones you think of when you think jerseys.

  2. Authentic jerseys. I believe that these are made as close to the real thing as possible, at least in terms of material, style, and cut.

  3. Either of the above, but personalized to say whatever you want (within limits. Remember when Vick gave that fake name and then people started ordering #7 Atlanta jerseys with that name on it? I think the NFL stopped all of them before they got out.) So you could go with #20 and your name if you wanted.

  4. Throwback jerseys. This is what you’re looking for if you want a Sanders jersey, but I’d try to get one in home blue. I just think the home jerseys for any team look better.

Prejudice is not proof of racism.
