The currency manipulation doesn’t just make Chinese goods cheap to us. It makes American goods expensive in China. Reverse the manipulation and Chinese goods become more expensive and American goods become cheaper.
They’re not why we shut down our steel factories. China is why Indonesia and Korea shut down their steel factories. We still import steel but now its from China instead of Indonesia.

They can manipulate it however they want. It doesn’t need to swing from one extreme to the other. One of the benefits, I suppose, of having a strong govt. Point is, they can fix it wherever they want it to be. Yeah, they may lose exports a bit to the US in volume, but it will probably be more in value. They aren’t going to be increasing their US imports by very much. What is it that you think that we make that the average Chinese consumer wants?

You did not seem to realize that things like iphones or armani or prada were made in China. Many luxury good are made in china, or are made from chinese manufactured parts. So, unless you are actually specifically retracting your point that all we will lose is “cheap clothing and electronics” you are incredibly wrong on this.
But, you are right, we do get quite a number of cheap items from China too. Most of our clothes, and many of our electronics, quite a bit of furniture, pretty much all of our small hardware (screws, nuts, washers, that sort of thing) come from china. Losing access to those “cheap” clothes doesn’t mean we will be making them, it just means that we will be paying higher prices for everything. Losing chinese manufacturing, or having them raise their prices would raise prices on just about everything in the US.
So yeah, trump could very well be responsible for increasing the cost of living or decreasing the standard of living for the average american consumer by a pretty significant amount.

There are 1.2 billion people in China. 7+ billion in the world. 320 million or so in the US. Yes, we have money for the moment, but China is already developing other markets around the world. They are not beholden to us and our economy. If our country tanked right now, it would hurt them, but they would get through it much better than we do. If we tank in 5-10 years, they’ll be ready.
And soon, everything we get from china will not be cheap as in inexpensive, it will be expensive, as in expensive.
We buy plenty of high en goods from china. We also buy quite a bit of raw materiel to manufacturer goods from china. We also buy quite a bit of hardware to put those raw materials together from china.
Unless you are conscientious about it, and specifically avoid such good, (and pay a premium for the privilege), at least half of what you buy on an everyday basis had something to do with china, even if the final assembly didn’t take place there.
