"Is it that the Dems don't understand white, working-class America?" No, that's not it

That’s not how economics works with open borders and global trade. Not to mention the specter of robotics and strong AI. You need to move on from 1920s thinking. It didn’t work then and it doesn’t work now.

Never mind that the entire Republican party got blindsided by an orange baboon, who told so many lies even HE couldn’t keep them all straight. And he won on bigotry and fear. Mexicans. Muslims. Walls. Etc etc etc.

Clean your own damn house, and stop the “Concern Troll” garbage. And for god’s sake don’t blame us because some idiot voted for Trump.

Cue Dietrich Bonhoeffer:
[QUOTE=On Stupidity]
If we want to know how to get the better of stupidity, we must seek to understand its nature. This much is certain, that it is in essence not an intellectual defect but a human one. There are human beings who are of remarkably agile intellect yet stupid, and others who are intellectually quite dull yet anything but stupid. We discover this to our surprise in particular situations. The impression one gains is not so much that stupidity is a congenital defect but that, under certain circumstances, people are made stupid or that they allow this to happen to them. We note further that people who have isolated themselves from others or who live in solitude manifest this defect less frequently than individuals or groups of people inclined or condemned to sociability. And so it would seem that stupidity is perhaps less a psychological than a sociological problem. It is a particular form of the impact of historical circumstances on human beings, a psychological concomitant of certain external conditions. Upon closer observation, it becomes apparent that every strong upsurge of power in the public sphere, be it of a political or a religious nature, infects a large part of humankind with stupidity. It would even seem that this is virtually a sociological-psychological law. The power of the one needs the stupidity of the other. The process at work here is not that particular human capacities, for instance, the intellect, suddenly atrophy or fail. Instead, it seems that under the overwhelming impact of rising power, humans are deprived of their inner independence and, more or less consciously, give up establishing an autonomous position toward the emerging circumstances. The fact that the stupid person is often stubborn must not blind us to the fact that he is not independent. In conversation with him, one virtually feels that one is dealing not at all with him as a person, but with slogans, catchwords, and the like that have taken possession of him. He is under a spell, blinded, misused, and abused in his very being. Having thus become a mindless tool, the stupid person will also be capable of any evil and at the same time incapable of seeing that it is evil. This is where the danger of diabolical misuse lurks, for it is this that can once and for all destroy human beings.

Sounds familiar…

Wow. That Bonhoeffer passage nails it. Thank you for that.

So these are the “I’m ok with niggers but can’t stand anyone that will consort with Joooos” white supremecists? So they stay home and let Obama win because McCain (the war hero) is a race traitor but Trump is not?

So they decide to vote for a guy that wants to acknowledge Jerusalem as the capital of Israel? Whose eldest son married a Jew and has children with her? Whose eldest daughter not only married a jew and has children with him, she is a converted observant orthodox Jew. THAT’S the guy that the anti-Semite white nationalists vote for?

C’mon. Are you sure you’re not just looking for excuses not to blame Hillary for an astounding defeat at the hands of a bobblehead?

He didn’t beat Hillary with racism and bigotry. He may have won the republican primary with racism and bigotry. He walked back a lot of that racist shit during the general election. He beat Hillary because Hillary is the shittiest candidate we have seen in this generation.

Once you are a cheater, you don’t get the benefit of the doubt anymore. You interpret all facts in the light least favorable to them. First we were all crazy to infer so much from a few harmless emails between DNC staff talking about how to derail Bernie, of COURSE they never did anything to act on those impulses. Then we find out about the debate questions and all of a sudden those harmless DNC emails look a bit more ominous. WTF else is there that we don’t know?

How do we know that Biden didn’t run simply because he was in grieving over his son and not because he was pressured to stay out of the race by Hillary and Debbie Wasserman Schultz and all the rest of the “ready for Hillary” crowd?

I am as sure that Bernie would have won as the “ready for Hillary” crowd was that Hillary was going to win when they told the Bernie supporters to shut up, sit down, grow up and get with the program because Hillary is going to be the next POTUS and at least you’ll get SOME of what you want and if you don’t fall in line soon, maybe you won’t even get that.

Once again, is the anti-semitic current so strong that it hits guys like McCain but blows right by the guy whose kids marry jews and convert to Judaism?

I won’t go so far as to say that her gender was a factor in her favor because of the “ready for Hillary” crowd, but you can’t blame it on the misogynists any more than you can blame it on the racists or die hard Republicans. Those votes are baked in and if she was going to lose because of those baked in votes then you are saying that she was basically unelectable which makes me wonder why everyone insisted that she be our nominee.

And Obama met that racist bar but white Hillary did not? :dubious:

Once again, I think you have to focus on how the votes swung between Obama and Hillary and she lost votes in almost every demographic except Republicans and LGBT compared to Obama.

We don’t have open borders and we don’t have to have free trade that throws our workers under the bus.

Trump won the PRIMARY with bigotry. Did you pay attention to the general election or were you too busy being outraged. Trump kept up with the lies, fear and orange baboonness but the bigotry scaled down to regular Republican levels of bigotry (perhaps not in a presidential candidate but no worse than what we see in plenty of Republicans on a daily basis).

This IS my house. I have been a Democrat since at least 2003 and Democratic leaning before that. Trump didn’t win this election, Hillary lost and if we don’t recognize this, we will nominate shitty candidates like her again in the future.

I’ve seen this same quote being used by both sides. Its just a fancy way of calling out the fact that most partisans (Republican or Democrat) are tools.

Except that that quote could just as easily be used by anyone for any purpose - “A strong upsurge in power” - that could be used by someone to critique the 1992 and 2008 elections just as much as 1980 or 2016. It states a “strong upsurge in power” without going into specifics as to who is coming to power. Power is cyclical in the US; it comes and goes every 8-12 years.

Your statement is basically that the cite has no meaning. That’s pretty cynical. Stupid isn’t black and white. It’s gray. Lighter and darker shades.

Evil economist wrote: “The Secretary of State responsible for the voting problems was Ruth Johnson, who is in fact a Republican.”

I went to college with Ruth. We lived in the same (small) dorm. She is the last Republican I voted for. She was a reasonable person at one time, who did her job impartially. She has since gone “over the edge”.

Sanctuary states would beg to differ. And globalization is here to stay.

It’s her fault. It’s just not all her fault. And yes, Trump inspired something in white supremacists that hadn’t inspired them in many years. You can just look at what the white supremacists said - Duke hadn’t endorsed a Republican in decades, but he endorsed Trump. Same with many other prominent white supremacists. They rationalized away anything about Trump that didn’t match, since they were never rational to begin with. But one only has to skim Stormfront to see that there are lots of racist assholes who said Trump inspired them to vote for the first time in a long time.

Why does it have to be one thing for you? It’s nuts. She screwed up, and the party screwed up, but that wasn’t enough. It was many things all at once. As far as I can tell, all you think the Democrats need to do differently is nominate someone else and they’ll win next time. I’m not so sure, and I think you’re being way too simplistic.

More simplistic nonsense. You haven’t presented any evidence she cheated, only that others tried (and failed miserably, even counter productively) on her behalf.

So you’re sure about something that’s false? Ha!

Yes. They stayed home, at least some of them, like Duke. They say it openly.

You don’t seem open to any conclusion but Hillary is terrible. Hopefully the party will consider all the other things that occurred besides her mistakes, because if the party follows your implication, we don’t need to do anything but have a better candidate. And I think the party has to do a lot more.

You’ve successfully made the case that she was a poor candidate who made a lot of mistakes. But you’ve closed your ears to a discussion of all the other things that happened that helped Trump win.

Part of the problem. a major part, is that conventional politicians didn’t know how to run against Donald trump. In either party. People just relied on the voters being too smart to fall for, what seemed to many, an obvious line of bullshit, with a side order of bigotry.

I realized fairly early on that his supporters didn’t like him in spite of the stupid crap he said, they liked him because of the stupid crap he said. But even I thought that kind of appeal had a natural ceiling short of sufficiency to win the presidency.

You must not be in tune with pop culture.

In what world does the existence of sanctuary states mean we have open borders? AFAICT sanctuary states are merely states that do not cooperate with the federal government in some way shape or form in enforcing immigration laws. They don’t actually stand int the way of border patrol from doing its job.

Of course globalization is here to stay but the shape that globalization takes is not yet set in stone. Civilization existed for centuries and empires were built on the mercantalist model. In fact some people would say that places like China are still operating under the mercantalist model.

Enough of this shit. You voted for him, not us. WE didn’t deliver jack shit. Blame your damn self.

Pretty sure he voted for Hillary.

That really should be the end of any conversation about the election.

When you lose to Donald Trump, you don’t get to lay the blame off on anyone or anything else. You OWN that. Sure there are a zillion variables in everything but this shit is just excuse making.

Because that is the one thing that was within our control. Picking the nominee. And we didn’t even do that right because we let the establishment tell us who to pick.

I’m saying that I can be at least as certain that Bernie would win as the “ready for Hillary” crowd were that Hillary would win. I can have that level of certainty and the ready for hillary crowd can suck a dick if they doubt it because they were shoving their certainty down our throats to get us to get in line behind the madonna hillary.

If everyone agrees on that and no longer tries to lay off blame on Jill Stein voters or “Merrikuh is racist” or the Russians did it, or “noone could have beaten Trump (the candidate of destiny!)”, then I think I’m done. I am just vehemently opposing all the folks on the left that want to blind themselves to the fact that Hillary was the primary cause of her own loss. This sort of echo chamber thinking that lays off the blame on a series of bogiemen is just a bunch of “ready for hillary” types that don’t want to admit that nominating her was a mistake. They want to say that nominating her wasn’t a mistake it was all these OTHER factors that were beyond her control that was the reason why she lost. And this sort of break from reality will keep coming back to fuck us in election after election unless we learn from this.

Failure has one very important function. It gives us an opportunity to be really honest with ourselves, or we can just fucking blame the Russians :smack::smack::smack:

So because the bigotry and fear mongering and the lying was dialed back a little, that makes it OK. Hmmmm.
It’s the usual. It’s accepted. It’s normal now.

Ladies and Gents. THIS is normalization. And it keeps increasing in tiny amounts. Just like the frog in the boiling pot.
