Well, the question was kinda dumb to begin with. Maybe not insipid, but definitely dumb.
manhattan let the thread stand by applying a real answer to it–if it’s just a fantasy scenario it belongs in IMHO or MPSIMS, and should have been closed immediately. For his trouble he got a snide remark from heptapod, who was indeed being a dick. Far as I’m concerned, Manny was entirely justified.
If the SDMB is the text equivalent of a community, then this* thread is the text equivalent of the phrase “violence begets violence.”

What I don’t understand is why manhattan posted a sensible reply to a stupid question.

Well, there was still potential for the thred to be a GQ at that point. Also, I’m thinking that, at heart, Manny is a big nerd who enjoys those funny thought experiments. And I use “nerd” as a compliment. 
Although the question is not a GQ, it’s not necessarily all that stupid. From the OP I had the feeling that he was working on a story idea - time travel is possible
but he doesn’t want time travellers to be able to use the experience to become artificially rich. So when you travel back in time you can only take an equivalent amount to what you have now. No selling the 10 year old car and going back to become a property baron, you just have enough for a 10 year old car.
Sycophants always resort to arguments like the question is dumb to defend their lord and masters. At least have the decency to follow a train of logic people. Seeking rays of reflected glory from Cecil is pathetic enough let alone a fricking mod. The question is dumb reads “I can’t answer it either because i lack the technical backround or the creativity for thought experiment.”
Remember, I dont know this guy who made the OP nor do I like him. I just opened up the thread because I thought it was interesting and noticed that manhattan (or “manny” as those who are just drooling to get on his top ten list call him) had closed the thread because his feelings got hurt.
Lets see, I had the guts to admit fault twice in this thread alone. What is unbelievably lame is that noone else does. The mature thing to do would have been to say yea, he made a mistake, people do that sometimes. I would have accepted it but instead you people resort to angry jury logic.
A mere train of logic won’t suffice for GQ. You need to catch the Fact Express to Tangible City to make it.
Obviously, a question about hypothetical exchange rates during time travel does NOT meet those standards.
KidCharlemagne, what do you mean “noone else” admits fault? The first reply is SlickUSA agreeing with you. Then Esprix agreed with you. IzzyR disagreed but then says you have a point and the issue is gray. That’s three people besides you that said manhattan made a bad call. Careful with those hyperboles.
This isn’t the first time a thread was closed instead of moved. I don’t have examples, but I’ve seen it before.
Unclaimed Fright, you’re still confused on terminology. “Martial Law” is temporary rule by military authorities. The Marshall Plan, or European Recovery Program, was a project instituted at the Paris Economic Conference (July, 1947) to foster economic recovery in certain European countries after World War II.
The word marshal that you cite is either a noun (a job title for a type of police officer or chief of fire departments) or a verb (the act of arranging, aligning, organizing, especially troops). There is no “marshal law”.
So no, the term “marshall” was not the correct civilian use after all. KidC just goofed spelling martial and used the phrase metaphorically.
Coldfire - the “train of logic” I was referring to was regarding the arguments in this thread, i.e. the logical dodging of the question as the whether manhattan was acting appropriately with “Welllll the question was dumb in the first place.” I mean that sounds like a three year old talking. I never made the argument that the OP’s question was a GQ.
Irishman - I should have been more clear. My “noone” was referring to the administration of SDMB. And funny that you bring up the Marshall Plan because that was the origin of my goof - I even capitalized it at first. I had been thinking of the Marshall Plan earlier in the day after the Mitchell Plan came up on TV.

I thought maybe he meant one of a bunch of hermits who in some way are affiliated to someone named Herman, who thinks that he’s “'Ennery the Eighth, I am.” 
The juries do tend to “rig” themselves in ATMB. It’s hard for a bystander to see someone take a stand like yours, see mods try to make you back down, and want to jump into the fray. I don’t want to jump in, but I do agree with you. The question was fun, and deserved to be moved. Manny tends to close threads that could be moved based on whim. Having said that, there’s not that much wrong with closing threads on whim. You can just repost on the suggested forum. There’s not much wrong with answering with attitude. This board has lots of it on every forum, and we’ve even seen Cecil get sharp-tongued on occasion. He should let it slide, and now that you’ve got a hung jury of 10-2, you should let it slide. There’s more battles every day, so don’t bog down on this one.

Your right, I try to spend more time actually understanding other people’s posts than making my own 100%. The moderators should try that some time too rather than posting to see themselves post. Did they recruit an Everquest quild to mod these forums? or have they moved to Dark Age of Camelot?
Ike, are you saying that Ed Zotti is really e. e. cummings?
