Of course not. She’s ugly in the face, too. Hollywood isn’t exactly bashing down the doors of dark-skinned black women. And apart from walking around mean-mugging for 2 hours, I didn’t see much acting out of her, either. I’m not saying she was bad, but she wasn’t particularly great, either. She was very good for a first-time actor. But the deck is very, very stacked against her. That’s why Howard thinks it’s messed up that everyone is blowing this America’s Sweetheart fantasy up her ass. She got the part because she is the size of a house. Those parts only come along every so often, and it’s not like she is going to get every single one when they do come along.
 Yeah, you know that media darling Howard Stern-- afraid to go after the REAL issues here and instead threw the safe PC softball about her weight.
Except Hurley’s lack of weight loss was explained.
A group of wacky hippies dropped a huge pallet of food on the island and before that everyone was eating good because Locke was able to hunt down several giant boars.
Who is the ‘everybody’ that is blowing fantasies up her ass? Hollywood? Yeah, Hollywood. So why are you so convinced that this same Hollywood won’t ever make any more roles for her? They freakin’ love her! You know, a lot of people don’t think she is ugly. I know she was ugly in that movie, like lots of actresses ugly up for movies, but in her interviews, she is actually quite pretty. Not typical Hollywood pretty, but she actually can act (she acted her ass off in that movie, don’t know how you gonna try to reduce that to simple mean mugging) so I am confident she will be offered all kinds of powerful character roles.
You got to understand that just because Hollywood sold you that dark skin is ugly, doesn’t mean that Hollywood beleives it. Sometimes, the same Hollywood that won’t put a dark actress on the big screen, is thrilled to send her down the runway, or plaster her image in their Haute Coutour magazines. As often as you would see white models? No. But then black women are only 12 percent of the population, so, we don’t really expect to be on every other page.
My point is, there is a place for a talent like Gabby. Maybe more Sundance or Broadway or more artsy fartsy stuff, but I can see her having a career. Film making is an art, and there are still screenwriters and film makers who are artists. I hope some of them will write for the girl. I’m rooting for her now, because, dang, people are just hatin hard now, to the point of just flat out calling the girl ugly.
By the way, I am guessing that You With the Face doesn’t listen to Stern. Anyone who does wouldn’t accuse him of doing anything to be PC.
Let’s just wait and see. A few years from now you’re gonna go hey, whatever happened that Ga-- Gaba-- . . . ummm, Gaber— hey, that handsome devilCiscowas right!
That’s not much of a bet since that happens to *most *young actresses who have one flashy first role. A few years later and maybe they’re still doing bit parts but people don’t remember them. Gabourey is no different. At least she does have a niche she can fill if needed.
Not Hollywood pretty (I’d say not pretty at all, but “Hollywood pretty” is more objective)
She will somehow have this great, long, odds-defying career. Because that was Howard Stern’s point: that those Hollywood wingbags were full of crap pretending like she was going to be the next It Girl.
She is the It Girl. Right now. She has a n Oscar, Hollywood is fawning all over her, and she already has projects lined up. Haters betta accept it, because the girl has already defied odds.
It’s very possible she’ll have a long career. What people forget is that long after you stop being the It Girl or It Boy, most of them go on to have solid (if unremarkable) careers. She’ll never be a star, but it’s likely she’ll find her niche as the sassy black friend.
To wit…
She has an Oscar nomination and two projects lined up: a movie called Yelling to the Sky where she plays the sassy black friend and a recurring role on a TV show called The Big C where she plays… the sassy black friend.
Haters? I don’t have anything against the girl, and wish her well. I’m just saying all of this highly temporary fawning is Hollywood self-congratulatory claptrap. “Oh, look at how accepting we are. We believe talent comes in all shapes and sizes. To prove it, we nominated Gabby Sidibe for an Oscar.” A few more roles are being offered now, at the height of the fawning, then she’ll return to wherever she came from. Maybe, *maybe *she’ll have the occasional part as the sassy, fat sidekick, but even then, she’ll have to lose a bit of weight.
Yeah, all of Hollywood is phoney. But who cares. Right now the girl is shining. Dammit, at this point I’m googling for a Gabby t-shirt. I could not be rooting harder for this girl right now.
I believe she will Hollywoodize herself, drop some weight, have some work done here or there. And I am hoping like hell she doesn’t get relegated to the sassy friend because I know she is dying to watch folks eat their words. I am thrilled this girl is having her time in the lime light. May she go the way of Queen Latifah and make everyone remember her name. FAME!
