Is "Raines" cancelled? Also, anyone watch it?

There hasn’t been a new episode in a few weeks, but I can’t find any hard information about it’s cancellation. I’ve seen a few posts mention that it isn’t cancelled, but not really any more information than that.

Hiatus? Cancelled? What’s the deal?

It was starting to grow on me. I don’t typically like detective type shows, but something about it really caught my attention.

I’d have zero interest in a supernatural detective show along these lines - but of course it isn’t, it’s just a format where instead of having a partner, he has a changing image of the victim to bounce his ideas off of, or who (as a mouthpiece for his subconcious) nudges him in the right direction.

Sometimes they overdo it - it seems like they have to forego subtlety to remind you every 5 minutes that it’s all in his head - but when they do use some subtley, when a victim’s look, voice, demeanor, etc. change without a big dramatic telegraphed change, it worked really well.

The show didn’t cheat at all - it’s not really a figure-it-out-yourself type mystery, but they don’t pull a random clue out of left field that solves the case.

And there’s something intriguing about Jeff Goldblum, although I have no idea why.

It’s too bad, if it is cancelled - it was mostly well written, original, and mostly well acted. Seemed like a lot of potential. I only watch 4 or 5 shows, so the loss of one of them really bugs me, whenever I see the loads, and loads of crap out there. Sometimes I’ll accidentally catch of one of those generic, painfully unfunny and unoriginal sitcoms (they’re all almost exactly the same) and think “they cancelled firefly, but they leave this crap on the air? must… destroy… hollywood” but then I realize that my beef is really with the general public, and it’s depressing.

The last episode they aired was billed as the season finale… I havent seen any word on it having been picked up…I’m afraid if they do, it may become too monkish - otherwise, simwife and I really enjoyed watching it

We really enjoyed it (are enjoying it, actually - we’re severely backed up on our DVR viewing). It’s not been officially canceled, but things don’t look good. The initial order for 6 episodes aired and there’s been no word if more will be added.

I’m a pretty determined anti-Goldblum gal, but I really liked him in this. His low murmur mumbling stream-of-consciousness thing, which I usually find irritating, actually works for this role.

But I’m a little freaked out at how he can wiggle his ears independently. That was a bit oogie.

Watched it, liked it, recommended it to the kiddies. Hope it comes back next year.

Great show for all the points you mentioned, hope it comes back.

Watched it, liked it, but have a very hard time hearing/understanding Goldblum’s dialogue.

StG

I stopped watching after a while. I wasn’t a fan of Goldblum’s hammy shouting sessions. I posted a funny comment about Raines’ relationship with Madeleine Stowe on the NBC boards… scroll down to post #18:

I watched it, and enjoyed it, for the reasons others have stated. I also really liked most of the supporting cast. Even the dumb-as-a-sack-of-hair patrolman had his moments. I almost recommended it to my mom, but it was over too soon. I knew not to pin my hopes on it being picked up for next season, though. Most of the quirky shows that I like seem to be doomed from the start.

I’ve always liked Jeff Goldblum; I’m not sure why.

I heard that the networks will be announcing their Fall 2007 line ups next week. So hopefully we will see that it made the cut.

I love the show. Wonderfully acted (at all levels especially GoldBlum - he can do more with a glance than most actors can do with 30 minutes of emoting). The scripts are excellent and consistently well presented and intelligent. Even the little things are watched and well taken care of.

In my mind it is the best show on television which unfortunately is probably the kiss of death.

I liked it too, and wrote to NBC saying so. I put in a good word for Friday Night Lights and Kidnapped as well. I think NBC had the best of the new shows this season – those three and Heroes.

I read an article somewhere this week saying that the networks and advertisers are going to have to figure out new ways to measure viewership. The article said first-run TV watching is down significantly for all the networks. There was some speculation that the long mid-season breaks are part of the problem.

Advertisers are saying they’re not getting their money’s worth, but that’s because viewers are sick of all the commercials! We’re TiVo’ing, or waiting and watching on DVD, and watching on-line. I’m not sure how or if those viewers are measured. The networks need to adapt.

Viewers who time-shift by whatever means (VCR or DVR) are not counted in the ratings. Advertisers do not want them counted because they skip comercials.

I’m a time-shifter, and (unsurprisingly) many of the shows I watch are low-rated because an inordinant percentage of their viewers time-shift. The Office, for example, suffers from up to a third of its audience time-shifting.

In the end, despite it being against my self-interest, I side with the advertisers. Unless they can figure out a way to advertise to the time-shifters, we shouldn’t count in the ratings.

USA Today reported it was finished a couple weeks ago, iirc.

Finished as in ended the planned run?

About to be canceled finished.

It’s hard to know for sure. I think NBC showed all the episodes that were filmed, six or seven. Did they show one or two eps and then decide based on ratings not to order more than that? I haven’t ready anything definite about whether it’ll be back. They’re hedging. Or being wishy-washy. Something.

NBC has announced their fall schedule. (Link is to TV Squad as the NBC website doesn’t have the info posted yet.) Raines didn’t make it.

Well poop!
