Julia Roberts is just another in the long line of Funny-Faced Females to become stars. There do seem to be an amazing number of them out there these days, unlike when Barbra Streisand pretty much had the field to herself.

Cate Blanchard, Reese Witherspoon, Gweneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sandra Bullock, Renee Zellwegger, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Nicole Kidman, Winona Ryder, Brittany Murphy, Joan Rivers… Sorry, got carried away there.

My opinion is that they appeal to women in the sense that if you capture from the right angle, in the right lighting, in the right outfits and makeup, they can be made by dint of long hard work to seem kinda beautiful even though they really aren’t. They are female fantasy objects in this way.

Admittedly, most models and supermodels are like this too, because in real life they mostly resemble yardsticks, but men don’t notice or care about anything deeper than the pictures and really don’t mind how phony their look is. They buy into the lie. You’ll notice that women hardly ever enthuse about supermodels.

Cameron Diaz and Nicole Kidman are funny-faced women??? Not in my damn book!

Having said that, I couldn’t agree more with your assessment of the others and I’ve felt that way all along. I was just shocked to see this incredibly cute and this incredibly beautiful woman, respectively, included in your list.

Personal opinions on Julia Roberts aside, I know what the original poster means by the distinction between the two, and I’d definately go with beauty over hotness.

And holy crud, I agree so completely with Ranchoth about the ugliness of the blond bombshell look. Urgh.

At some times she is a gorgeous woman that I would step over my own dying best friend to talk to her.

And at other times she looks like she has a horrible skin disease that I wouldn’t want to get within twenty feet of.
