Breeder is totally non-offensive. Well, I guess it could be offensive if said to somone who thinks that it’s wrong to pollute the Earth with people. The “value” of NOT procreating is (mostly) a homosexual one. Well, I guess it’s more accurate to say that of the groups of people that specifically do NOT value procreating, who consider having kids wrong, most of those people are homosexuals. That isn’t to say that there aren’t homosexuals that want kids, and there aren’t heterosexuals that think overpopulating the Earth is right, but I think there are more homosexuals that find it bad to have kids than heterosexuals. It seems logical to me. So to call someone who values procreation a breeder is just stupid. It’s like calling me “dude”. DUH! I am a dude. DUH! I am a breeder!
And the idea that “Breeder” only refers to bad parents just doesn’t make sense to me. Gramatically the word Breeder means “someone who breeds.” So unless you KNOW the skewed meaning of the term you aren’t going to take it as an insult. Call me a breeder. I don’t care. It’s a compliment to me.
Breeder is a minority slur directed at a majority. (shrug) I’ve only encountered the word in electronic print. Hence, I find it sterile and devoid of any emotional derogatory context.
Now, if I was cornered in a gay bar by a bunch of gay men intent on initimidating me… I suppose I’d have to feel dehumanized in that context.
Damn right it is offensive to some, which makes it offensive. I could care less, but my wife would burst into tears. I have an “overabundance of children. (usually 5 or more)”. Once a woman looked at my and said “Well, you’re just a baby making machine, aren’t you”. She came home and cried. The fact that we spent over five years fruitlessly trying to have children, and then birth control couldn’t stop us once we got going didn’t help.
She is also a farmer’s daughter. Any idea what a breeder is there? (We’ll ignore nuclear reactors.) Being equated with animals bought to make money sounds dehumanizing to me.
