Is there a site on the Web where you can post a picture ad-hoc ?

See subject. I have a Flickr account, but prefer not to invite anyone on it, or have to go through conniptions to lock out all my porn.

I just want to put something up for people I invite–like now, because i have a visual ID query–for a look see. I could set up a new Flickr account, or futz around with Picassa, but that seems too high power.

Cloud?

TinyPic and Imgur.

PS What does ad hoc mean?

Flickr has a Guest Pass feature that lets you create a special link anyone can use to view an otherwise private picture.

There are plenty of sites – just search for “image hosting” and pick one. Most of them run on the “freemium” model (you can get a free account that will do the basics, or a paid account with more storage and features).

I still don’t understand what “ad hoc” means in the context of online image hosting.

ad hoc usually means someone with another device/person/thing (like an ad hoc connection - between two computers rather than a computer and the wider internet)

you can use localhostr & only give out the link for the image to the people who should have it, or use imgur

I think they just want to be able to upload a photo without logging in or people being able to see their whole gallery of photos. If they want to post an image here, they don’t want us all looking at their family Christmas photos too and don’t want to bother with privacy settings or public/private albums etc.

Imageshack is pretty good. You don’t even need an account.

If you want to post a pic for viewing here, use the Tapatalk app. The app will host the photo for you and you can embed it in the post. On the app the photo will appear, using the web you’ll see the link to the Tapatalk host.

Willy-nilly, or on the fly.
Probably best to host them yourself. Many free, and paid, image services, close without warning; and others may lock the account if they think an image is porn.

However, I use Shutterfly for this sort of thing.

Thanks, all.

On-the-fly is best. Set up for the moment.
“Willy-nilly” is more like “no matter what.” Its source is “will-he nill [will not]-he.”

I was not even aware that “ad hoc” had any meaning in a technological context.

You can link to a Flickr picture without revealing which Flickr user it belongs to, for example.

(When you’re looking at the photo on the normal Flickr page, click on “Actions”, the “View all sizes”. Choose the size you want, then right click on the image to get the address of the image. Here’s that picture above on the normal Flickr page, where you can see who the Flickr user is.)

Actually, just as a tip, if you want to save a Flickr image, and can’t because of spaceball.gif etc.:

Install Web Developer Extension in Firefox, mouse to: CSS/Disable Styles/Disable All Styles and the page reloads without protection.
The more someone tries to stop saving of an image, the more imperative the challenge, just because it’s so damn silly to put something on the internet and forbid downloads.

Most common tech usage is ad-hoc query - a one time unique query (as opposed to one that is established and run repeatedly)

Why do you have porn saved to your flickr account? Seems inefficient.

Edit : imgur is exactly what you need.

Don’t do that unless your whole album is otherwise private. If it is public, google has probably indexed it, and a simple search for “farm2.staticflickr.com/1262/1348742200_fd8058eb8a_z.jpg” will show the album it belongs in.

I have used the term ‘ad-hoc’ to describe something that allows a user to do some ‘at will’ without having to setup something ahead of time. A one-time knock off.

I agree with Yorikke that imgur will meet your needs.
