Posting photos online--recommendations?

I’m going on a work-related trip soon and want to be able to post my photos so my students can see them. What are your recommendations? Ideally, I’d like something that’s free, doesn’t require viewers to sign up, and is easy to upload to.

Thanks.

I use Yahoo photos. You have to sign up with Yahoo in order to upload pictures (it is free though) but it isn’t neccessary to sign up just to view them.

And uploading is easy, just drag and drop.

If you want to see what it looks like here are my photos there.

I recommend Flickr: I’ve been using it for over a year, and I really like it. Basic accounts are free, uploading is easy, and photos that you set as “public” are viewable by anyone without having to log in or anything – in other words, it fits your criteria. You do only get a limited number of sets (albums) with a free account, but it sounds like this is mainly for your trip photos so that probably won’t matter. Here are my public sets, if you’d like to see what other people will see.

I like Snapfish. It’s what I use most of the time for photos I share here. If you’re a beginner, you’ll find it’s easy to use, and it allows for some minor editing of photos. (Removing red eye, cropping and brightening the image/contrast.) It’s free and they allow you to store a lot of photos.

Okay, I’m trying Flickr! Since this is the Dope, I’ve posted cat photos.

Yahoo works great; all you need is a Yahoo email address, which is free. One note, however: make sure you check the box that allows public viewing of your photos.

I am looking for a site to post some of my photos to as well. Mostly I want to be able to show my photos to my family and friends.

Do any of the sites offer restricted areas that you can control access to, or areas that cannot be searched by the general public?

I never used it myself, but Kim Komando recommended this one service recently:

Try picturetrail.com. You can make seperate photo albums, each with a different password if you like. I have been using this service for about three years with a yearly fee. They offer free service also, but you don’t get as much storage space.

Yay! I really like the Kitty #3 photo.

Flickr does, too: you can choose whether photos are private, friends-only, family-only, friends-and-family-only, or public.

I love Flickr.

Kitty #3 is the boytoy. He is still getting used to me after over 9 years of me entering his house.

Flickr took a long time to load those three photos. Is that typical? I was on a fast wireless connection, but I did take the photos with a Canon SD600.

Well, it depends on the file size. Were they big TIF files? I definitely notice a difference when I’m uploading a handful of TIFs versus JPGs.

I tend to upload all of my photos in their native TIF format, because Flickr will resize them for me – but then, I’m paying for the abilily to upload up to 2GB of photos per month. Haven’t ever had that much, but I guess it’s nice to know that I have the option.

Hey, you’re talking to somebody who just learned how to do this within the last few days, so I have no idea. I’ll get back to you if I can figure it out.

Sorry, I thought you were just new to Flickr – didn’t realize you were new to filetype stuff.

Yahoo has this feature, as well.
