What is a good on-line photo archiver?

I’m looking for a place to upload my digital photos. I’m thinking of a free site, please.
Do these places have file size restrictions? Can I post naked photos of my GF?
Who’s the best, the easiest (for my non-computer brain)? Are my photos private or shown to the world?
What else do I need to know?

Thanks for your advice in advance.

Google’s Picasa is a good free web program. It lets you upload 1GB for free, but you can buy 10gb for a yearly fee. It has a load of cool features, such as tagging like Flickr, but you can also order prints, easily navigate and edit albums, put your pictures and albums on the map (you can place each picture on a location on a google map so people looking at your album can see WHERE you took the pictures, or you can just pin the location of the whole album).

Also, Picasa has software you can download for free to edit and organize your photos. You download the program, it finds all pictures on your hard drive and you can organize them into albums and then upload them from there to your Picasa account. None of this “uploading 6 pictures at a time crap” like the other places.

When I run out of room on my Picasa account (I have like 15 albums and only using 250MB or so), I will probably upgrade. It is only 20 dollars a year for 10gb of storage. More than enough.

edit: Also, you can make albums public or private. I’m not sure if you can post naked pictures of your GF, but if you put it into a private file, it isn’t likely it will be noticed.

FTR, Flickr does all this as well.

If you plan to share your pictures with friends or other people, Flickr definitely has the edge in size of userbase, plus Flickr has partnered with a bunch of companies who’ll print business cards or shirts or calendars or whatever.

No, I don’t work for Flickr, I just really like it. I just wish it had been sold to anyone but Yahoo.

I don’t know about the other sites, but I like the comments section on Flickr and the fact they show the extra EXIF camera information (like camera model, shutter speed, etc.)

You can even search for pictures from particular camera models.

I’ve been in Flickr for more than a year, and I like a lot of things about it, including the tools it has for building user communities, and the tools it has for finding pictures on particular subjects or taken in particular parts of the world.

Is there any site where multiple invited contributors can add photos?

I coach, and instead of me receiving photos form other parents, and then uploading them to a photo album, I think it’d be cool to have them be able to add to it themselves. Kinda like a google doc.

Yes, you can do that in Flickr. You would want to to do either or both of two things:

(1) Set it up so that you are contacts of each other, as “Friends”. If you want to keep pictures private from the rest of the world, just set it so that only “Friends” can view the pictures.

(2) Set up a group within Flickr, get all your contacts to join the group, and then add pictures to the group. The group can be set up so that it’s private in various ways, e,g., no outsiders see pictures in the group, and people only get admitted to the group by invitation or after acceptance by an administrator of the group. (The person setting up the group is automatically an administrator).

Obligatory link to the SDMB* Flickr Group

*Insert all that legal bullshit about not actually being affiliated or whatever here.

Note that that group is a completely public group: anyone can view the pictures there, any Flickr member can join the group immediately and once joined any Flickr member can post pictures to the group without moderation. (Though it’s always possible for an admin or mod to delete pictures from the group, and for an admin or mod to remove or ban a member of the group).

I’m sure glad you guys have not found the fast loading/downloading sites with no adds or all the BS of ‘Flicker’ and Photobucket’ et al.

Hot links are great.

As to nude or porn, just remember, there is nothing fully private or safe on the net. If you think there is, you deserve what is gonna happen sooner or later.

It’s dangerous out there and you all need to be careful.
There is no danger for the folks that are just telling you ‘there is no danger.’

YMMV

::no, I ain’t tellin ya about the really good free sites. I want them to stay good.:::

I’m gonna go ahead and assume you were drunk here.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I opened a Flikr account that seems to meet my needs.

Thanks for stopping by…
