My wife and I have little self-control when we go to the local donut shop, which thankfully isn’t very often. But when we do go, we usually get a dozen various types of donuts, fritters, long Johns, etc. This is more than the 2 of us can eat in a day. Is there a way to keep them relatively fresh for a few days?
Just leaving them in the box tends to dry them out very quickly. My wife puts them in ziplock baggies but they get soggy by the end of the day. Is there a technique that would save them in between these 2 extremes?
It probably depends on the donut. For a basic glazed, they seem to keep well enough in the original box, presuming it’s kept closed. Then microwaving for 5-10 seconds right before eating. The microwave warms and softens the donut. Almost as good as fresh.
Between the extremes? Sure, but fixes the problem? Not in my experience.
Seriously, the old standby of a waxed paper bag works pretty well, less air permeability than the cheap boxes, but slowing the slog that a fully enclosed zip lock encourages. Even a normal paper bag for me is a better result, as I have few problems with slightly staler donuts than any sort of soggy donut.
Could also probably go with a paper bag or even the original box and add something emitted a certain degree of moisture such as a brown sugar stone to offset some of the H20 loss.
