Having a nefarious and long-standing prior association in common is so much easier on the feelings than just accepting that the thing a group of people actually has in common is a unanimous agreement on the fact that I am an asshole. Yeah, I go with the clique theory too. Conspiracy can be a great comfort.
Certainly I can’t really be an asshole.
We should establish a clique for newbies. Then we can throw them out of it, after they have more than three posts.

Actually, if there are cliques on this MB, I wouldn’t call any of them elite. Has there been gang mentality demonstrated from time to time? I’d say yes. But it tends to be the sort of natural “circle the wagons” or “defend my friend” mentality that arises in specific circumstances. I think it would be hard to find examples of any identifiable group that is hostile to every new poster.
There are also hot button issues that can bring out some predictable responses from many folks. That, too, is not so much an example of cliquishness as it is normal human reaction.
BTW, yojimbo, regarding the OP. “Reg” status (or even “evil R.E.G.” status) is not determined by overall post count, but by “regularity” of posting. Your “regularity” makes you a reg.

It’s been said before, but it should be repeated: What is your definition of clique?
There are the flirters. Don’t try and interupt them when they get on a roll.
There are the arguers. Once they start, don’t bother trying to inject reason into the thread-- you will be ignored.
There are the nit-pickers. You all know who you are. When I was relatively new I had a nit-picker follow me from post to post, nit-picking the placement of my commas.
The Opals. You know what I mean.
I don’t think there are deliberate cliques. There are no secret meetings or hidden agendas. There are no rules and you are not allowed in or deliberately kept out. It’s just the way a large group forms subsets.
Don’t take it personally.

I don’t get this. Of course there’s a clique. Every time I switch threads or forums, my computer goes Clique as it changes screens. Is this a bad thing that I don’t know about?
Whoa, whoa, whoa! The whole point of that post in the Pit was because (1)It was in the Pit (2)People were being all mushy and nice instead of arguing and fighting (3)The only reason I made a “newbie” reference was to basically make fun of people who do bash newbies! I threw it in there to add a little more mock-hostile emphasis! I was trying to post a mock-irritated “why-are-we-being-nice-in-the-Pit” thread and I guess it caught the wrong people’s attention! That will teach me to post sarcasm!
I have no problem with anyone unless they act like a moron. It doesn’t matter if you have 5 posts or 5,000 posts. I have defended several people on the boards that I felt were being attacked just for not quite having the hang of it yet. And I also have certain well-established posters that I cannot stand because of their attitudes etc.
That said, I do not believe there is an elite clique on the board. I do think there are several posters here who think that their “veteran” status puts them into some untouchable classification but for the most part, everyone takes their lumps when they are deserved. We have had many people come here and fit right in with little to no adjustment period and then we have had people come here who struck the majority of posters the wrong way.
Basically, if you martyr yourself because of your post count, then don’t expect sympathy because everyone here was new at one time or another. However, if you try to get the feel of the board, apologize when you mess up and eventually get into the flow of things, then there will be no problem.
It looks like various members of the clique have hijacked this thread! Way to go, guys! Do you think the newbies bought the “Of course, there’s no clique” spiel?
