What distrubs me far more than this is the fact that the folks on DU seem to all (or mostly anyway… there is one dissenter so far) that this is a good thing. And yet, my gut tells me that if Joe Biden’s or Barack Obama’s email account was hacked, they’d be (rightfully) outraged, calling for investigations and prosecution of the people involved.
Have we become so blinded by partisan politics that we can’t even recognize when someone does something wrong?

And, yes, I’m aware that there is some question regarding her using this account for state business and that some of the emails may be subpoenaed. Still doesn’t make it right.
What does this have to do with fairness? Has the Obama/Biden campaign been alleged to have anything to do with this? Oh and can someone remind me if I’m wrong, but I thought Anonymous was some internet group with a bug up their asses over Scientology.
Political races, at themost fundamental level, are about breaking fairness over your knee and crushing it until it cries for mama. It ain’t about fair, it’s about winning.
On the other hand, “Palin has come under fire for using private e-mail accounts to conduct state business. Critics allege that she uses the account to get around public records laws, as the Bush administration has also been charged with doing.”
Not sure that justifies hacking, and two rights don’t make a wrong… but… seems relevant that she broke the law first.
BTW, I don’t mean to pick on the Dems at DU here… they’re just the current example. I’m sure there would be plenty of Republicans who would cheer the same thing happening to the Dems.
But that’s for law enforcement to decide. These people would be horrified if the circumstances were reversed (i.e. if Biden’s personal emails were under investigation and someone hacked them and plastered them all over the web). But since it happens to the other side, well, then all is right with the world.
I can’t condone the behavior. It’s vigilantism at best, and criminal at worst. But I can understand that someone, fed up with the constant stonewalling we’ve been subject to for the last several years and seeing a resurgence of that in Palin, would be inclined to do so. I can’t fault wanting to do this, but I can fault the action.
Yeah, well I call bullshit. Without knowing anything about you I’d bet my eyeteeth you’re a republican. This reeks of the disingenuous bullshit the republicans have been spreading for weeks. It goes something like this…
A. Find something said by anyone who could remotely considered a non republican who said or did something critical of McCain/Palin.
Unfair is hacking a public person’s email account to expose their secrets.
However, this email was essentially used for state business. It’s unfair that she’s used this account to dodge accountability in her actions.
You act like someone just hacked her personal email to make fun of her, Zev when in reality people are doing it to get a bit of transparency on her operation as governor. She’s kept these things secret. I think in some sense we Americans deserve a full picture of how she runs Alaska before we give her the chance to be a 72-year-old heartbeat away from running the country.
Secondly, this was not done by Obama. You talk about fairness, well, I’ve got news for you, Democrats are done with playing nice. You can blame nobody but the Republicans for that. How fair is it for people to question Obama’s patriotism and tell people he’s a secret Muslim? This shit has been coming from the Right for a looooooooong time now. Or maybe when people suggested that Michelle Obama was a black panther? There’s plenty more of that shit and it began before McCain even won the nomination. Your boys at Fox news do nothing but smear and lie about Democrats all goddamned day. Now when something happens Mooselini you’re going to say how unfair things are. Reminds me of the old crybaby at the playground.
Yes, but subpeoning Yahoo for those archives will surely take longer that 6 weeks, or whatever it is until Nov. 2. They’ve thought of everything.
Actually, I’m just taking a bit of the piss out, I don’t think that’s what really happened, but I like to think that Rove and his ilk at least considered it.
I think it was a pretty snotty, and stupid thing to do too. But I equate it to something akin to a fellow Red Sox fan vandalizing a Yankee fan’s house or something like that. Just because he might agree with my allegiences, doesn’t make him being a dumb-fuck any less … um … dumb-fuckish.
I’m a Dem, and I think that this is despicable and the people who did it should be charged with whatever crimes they may have committed. While Watergate now seems quaint compared with lying to start wars, etc. breaking in and invading privacy are still illegal and should be prosecuted.
On edit: Nor do I think that this is an official account matters. Governors are entitled to keep their working accounts private until a court orders compliance with a subpoena. Rule of law and all that.
If you’re going to make analogies, you also have to throw in that Biden is conducting government business illegally and unethically on his own private email account first. I’m a partisan liberal, and I would not be horrified if Biden was hacked, because I would be more horrified about Biden’s actions.
