Is there any place online where I can buy tinned kippered herrings?

Used to be an easily obtained staple, but now, can’t find them anywhere, in local stores or online. But, my Google fu is shaky at the best of times.

Now the local stores are only offering some abomination they call “kippered sardines”.

Amazon seems to have them. Can’t verify their quality.

If you know the brand you like I’ll look them up.

Calling them “tinned” (as opposed to “canned”) makes me wonder where is “local” for the O.P.?

International shipping is $$ so help us find you what’s at least somewhat local?

I have never seen them tinned, which doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Over here they usually come vacuum-packed as boil-in-the-bag, or fresh.

I’m assuming North America by their page.

I think I remember something about Canada in their posts.

King Oscar is a common brand their Kippered herring snacks should be available online.

I was recently telling my wife about how my mother would fry us fresh kipper for breakfast sometimes. In our family her and I were the only ones who liked it and it would smell up the kitchen. It was easy to get in the supermarket and we could buy it whenever we wanted. Now you never see it and most people haven’t even heard of it. The same with Whitefish chubs. The supermarket near us when I was kid would have smoked whitefish in a variety of sizes you could eat off the bone. We would get it for when we broke the Yom Kippur fast each year but also we would sometimes get it for breakfast during the year. These days if you see it at all it is just whitefish salad (which the old markets also had).

That’s what I found before, the Brunswick kippers. When shipping is included, it comes to about $70 for four small tins, which is exorbitant for something I used to buy for about $5 a tin. Can’t tell if that’s $70 US or Canadian. If US, probably comes in closer to $90 for four tins. Le sigh.

I can find them in supermarkets here (King Oscar brand).

I used to eat them on toast before I got married. Was banned by my wife due to the offensive smell. My daughter agrees with her mum.

I only get them now when they’re both away.

Amazon says “This item cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location. Please choose a different delivery location.” Le sigh x 2.

Did you try looking for Kippered Snacks? They seem to be available everywhere. I don’t know how to test whether it would ship to Canada, but here’s an example:

Smoke me a kipper. I’ll be back for breakfast.

I thought of Supertramp:

Could we have kippers for breakfast
Mummy dear, mummy dear
They gotta have 'em in Texas
Cause everyone’s a millionaire

My first thought was to check for them in Texas…

Brunswick and King Oscar are distributed across North America and should be readily available at *mart and larger groceries.

“This item cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location. Please choose a different delivery location.”

One would think so, but that’s not my experience.

Kippered sardines, yes.

Kippered herrings, no.

At least, not in any store in my town that I’ve checked.

Kippered sardines are ficticious, herring plentiful. I’ll bet they have your kipper’ snacks at Walmart or your CA equivalent. Or even a larger drugstore.

Nope, not at Walmart or Safeway or a couple of Canadian grocery chains.

Nova Scotia producer.

Ships free within Canada but have to spend $49.
