Is there any way I can beat this traffic ticket?

I think I’ve told this story before, but I got a ticket for failure to stop while riding a bicycle. The intersection was in a residential neighborhood and had a 4-way stop. At the time I commuted–around 6:45AM–there was almost never any cross traffic. So, I would usually slow down a bit, look both ways, then ride on.

Apparently there had been complaints about automobiles rolling through the stop sign, so they posted an officer a block or so down the cross street. When I heard the siren, I pulled over, and boy was I surprised when the motorcycle came up behind me! He informed me rather tersely that bicylists were required to put one foot down at stop signs, and wrote me up.

The ticket was $125, so I went to court, figuring that the officer would never show up to testify for a lousy bicycle infraction—wrong! I admitted my guilt to the judge, but said that I thought that the fine was WAY too high. The judge told me that the law applied to everyone equally, but reduced my fine to $28.
