Is there no NHL playoffs thread? {2024}

34 for the Oilers winning it all, 28 for the Panthers making the SC Final?

Mark Messier (now on the intermission broadcast team) was the captain for both the last Edmonton and Ranger championship teams.

The Panthers made the Final last year; they lost to Vegas.

31 for Canada.

I just realized an obscure bit of trivia with the finals of the NBA and NHL. Both representatives of the western conference this year were seeded #5, the Dallas Mavericks and the Edmonton Oilers. With such a low seed, #5, this may possibly have not happened before. A guess.

The Mavericks face the #1 seed Boston Celtics. Game 1 is tonight.
The Oilers face the #2 seed Florida Panthers. Game 1 is Saturday.

(Double posted to both threads, NBA and NHL.)

For anyone needing to get up to speed, CBC overview here. Game 1 tomorrow, Saturday, at 8:00 PM!

That is, of course, Eastern Daylight Time, and it’s on ABC in the states.

Honestly, I’m really not so narrow-minded as to think that my timezone is the only timezone, or that everybody watches CBC! I’m just excited to see the game!

I wasn’t implying anything of the sort…just clarifying for anybody else that might be following this thread!

Yep, that’s how I took it too. Appreciate the clarification.

C’mon Edmonton!

And the 6’ 10” Zo was banging the drum before the game in Miami for the Florida Panthers.

Wow, that Panthers defense is just too stifling. I thought the Oilers might take one of the first two. But no.

Hopefully the crowd in Edmonton will motivate them to go upstairs and score on Bobrovsky. I’d like to see the Oilers win, but the Panthers have been playing well. Edmonton probably needs to win the next two games.

I hope the Oilers win too. They skated very well in game 1. Not so well in game 2, and towards the end of game 2 they lost their focus.

Ehh, I’m rooting for the Panthers for completely irrational reasons. I don’t like McDavid’s face, never have, and I have absolutely no idea why.

Fortunately for Edmonton, we all know how much my feelings affected the last series. I expect my feelings to have similar performance in the remainder of this one. The Panthers have had pretty stellar luck so far, though.

Popping in late.

Bummed my Canucks crapped out again. Pederson was an absolute ghost. Buncha mugwumps. Whatever I mean by that.
Finals - after game one - convinced Bobrovsky’s getting the Conn Smythe, and then game two kinda sealed that pickle.

   Maybe a little W5 or Mad Dash to follow.

Oh but goodness gravy, bassist: you gotta like how he’s The Greatest Skater in the History of All Time, and almost as oustanding a passer as Gretzky was.

Here - maybe you’ll like this photo of him getting randomly accosted by folks at an airport.

Or his socks, which are free to be viewed in the internet, but unloadable here.

Not a Panthers fan, but I sure am of Paul Maurice. Only three coaches have won more games, but at least they have a cup or two (or NINE - Scotty Bowman) under their belt; Maurice has yet to get one. Deserves one.

Missed edit window by forever - adding that Maurice also has the most alltime losses by a coach (713). Yeah, he’s logged in a lot of games.
Rooting for McDavid getting 2.75 assists per game in the four-straight-games comeback.

Going in to third period with the Panthers currently leading the Oilers 4-1, so things are not looking great. The Oilers tied it up early in the second period but then allowed three goals in short succession. They’ve played well, Edmonton, mostly. But Bobloblaws is too good a goalie.

Hehe, I admit he’s a great player, I don’t have to like him.

Hehehe, nope. His face is still there.

And yeah, Edmonton was put in the position of having to win 4 in a row tonight. It’s not a done deal, but they’re going to have to pull off a bit of a miracle to win the cup.

Stick a fork in ‘em.

Put a bullet in their head.

They’re done.
