Is there no NHL playoffs thread? {2024}

It’s a tall order, but if McDavid can get 6 points over the next two games, he’d break Gretzky’s record for the most points in a single postseason (47).

McDavid’s goal off of Bobrovsky’s back skate was incredible.

Tkachuk’s save at the empty net in the final 30 seconds was a wild play. And then McDavid’s following him and scoring was pure hustle, while OEL’s lack of hustle on that play was weak and he made it easy for McDavid to score. It didn’t really mean anything because it meant a 5-3 final instead of 4-3, but overall that was a wild play.

Game 6 should be exciting!

Just in case anyone else is absent-minded like me, don’t forget that Game 6 is tonight, Friday June 21, 8:00 PM EDT. This game is going to end either with the Oilers finally and heroically digging themselves out of a 3-0 series deficit and forcing Game 7, or with a Stanley Cup celebration for the Panthers.

I’m hoping for Game 7 because:

  • I’d rather the Oilers win than the Panthers
  • that’d be amazing!

I’m with @Mahaloth !

Edmonton up 2-0 right now. Hope it holds on.

I was away from the TV for just one minute after the start of the 2nd period, and both teams scored a goal! I know it’s my magical power at work and not just coincidence, because the same thing happened in Game 5! Big things always happen just when I’m not watching!

Was happy to see the Panthers goal overturned because the offside violation, but not sure how legit that call really was – a discussion for another time.

Certainly looks like we’re headed to Game Seven.

Wow! 3-0 Oilers heading into the 3rd period!

Pulling for the Oilers but man, these commentators are the worst. Just call the game and stop telling me ad nausea what the losing team needs to do. Pretty sure they know what they need to do.
I really miss Doc Emrick.

I do think overturning the goal was correct, but it’s a damn close call. Whoever on the Oilers has the final say on making that challenge earned their money with that one.

If this does go to game 7, then I have no idea how to predict what might happen. It seems completely wide open.

Edmonton just scored 2 goals in about 10 seconds.

5-1.

I mean, they were empty netters (to anyone who wasn’t watching.) But go Oilers!

But Maurice pulled the goalie really early, like at around 4 minutes, IIRC. That’s unusual and seems to speak to a huge arrogance about his team’s abilities… A 6-on-5 with an empty net is always a huge risk that has to be time-limited.

Anyway, a really fun game. I have no idea what to expect in Game 7 but it will definitely be a major event in the annals of sports.

Arrogance? They were down by two. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen a goalie pulled that early in such a case.

The Edmonton goalie got an assist on one of them, that has to be rare.

Yeah, it’s not arrogance. It’s the obvious play. They need two goals against a good team. Pulling the goalie early gives you a better chance of getting those goals. Of course it also gives the other team a better chance of getting an empty net goal, but so what? There’s no benefit to losing by 2 instead of by 4.

Cool tantrum Maurice had over the disallowed goal. Will still feel really bad for him if they lose game 7. But go Edmonton.
Panthers barely had any shots on net - they looked it.
Quite impressive with the Oils allowing only 1 shorthanded goal in 47 - a play-off record.
Dullard play-by-play dude makes the occasional, um, wrong call. Oh well.
Hoping game 7 goes to quad OT.

That was fun to watch! After the Panthers dominated and overwhelmed the Oilers in the first games, this has turned into a great series.

With the Panthers needing to score 2 goals in four minutes, pulling their goalie right then and there was the only realistic chance they had. Wait any later and they’d have left themselves too little time.
