Is this a bison?

Yesterday, I went to Maymont Park in Richmond, VA and took some photos. Being more interested in playing with the lens I just inherited from my dad (55-200mm!), I wasn’t really paying attention to all of those Informative little signs that would have told me what I was photographing. Now, I’m left with photos of a mystery animal. Here it is. Maymont’s website says that they have bison on the property, but it doesn’t really look like the bison pictures google gave me, except in the most basic ways (they’re both large, cowlike animals with horns). Is it a very skinny bison, or is it something else?

Definitely NOT a bison. Looks like a steer, though I’ve never seen one with hair like that.

Looks like a cattle to me, maybe an unusual breed. I guess it could be Beefalo, A Buffalo/cattle hybrid of an unusual breed.

Looks like an ox to me.

Heck Cattle? Official cattle of Nazi Germany - an attempt to reintroduce the Aurochs, which they saw as part of the Aryan agricultural history?

Looks like a Longhorn to me.

The website for Maymont Park says that they have Scotch Highland cattle there. Googling it reveals a lot of animals that look like yours, only shaggier. The coloration and the horns look about right, though; maybe this one was shorn for some reason?

You could always contact the Maymont Park people and ask; there’s a contact form on their website (see above.)

I’m going with a beefalo (yes, really). Where this one was probably crossed with a longhorn type ‘cow’, and the horns were not removed.

Just a guess though.

It looks like a Yak to me.

My co-worker has some Scotch Highland Cattle that look just like the one in your picture. It’s possible that they shed out for the summer like horses. Unfortunatly I am not at work today, or I would ask.

Another vote for Higland Coo ( as an acquaintance besotted with the breed used to say ) or some cross involving one.

Highland Beef in summer uniform. Pretty ferocious looking but SUPPOSEDLY quite gentle and domesticated… Here is a cow-calf pair.

You are looking at the wrong end of that animal to Identifie it as a “Steer”
And for that matter probably not an “Ox” either.

That calf is obviously half cow half sheep.

They’re almost insanely cute, aren’t they? And not just “for a cow.”

If I ever get a pet cow ( granted, wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy down on the list of what is likely  ), it will be a nice orange Highland beasty.

Would you believe that I looked on the website to see what kind of animal it is? I must be blind.

Thank you all for you help.

I’m by far no expert, but I don’t think you have your answer yet. I’d email the pics to them and ask.

Possibly, we must inspect the jizz to confirm though.

FTR, a bison is what many of us mistakenly call a buffalo. It is the bison that is on those nickels.

The difference between the two, of course, is that you can’t wash yer 'ands in a buffalo.
