I completely agree. Israel is a nation like any other, and reasonable people will disagree, often quite deeply, about the wisdom/legality/efficacy of policy decisions by its government. That’s not antisemitism, any more than criticism of China’s human-rights record is anti-Chinese bigotry. Hhowever, I think that in Wildfire’s particular case, there really is some antisemitism behind his views. Note this sentence:

Wow, given the fact that most of the Mid-East boundaries were created by European conquest that’s a remarkably arrogant thing to say. And you don’t have the slightest clue what the word genocide means. Germans killed millions of Jews with the intent to wipe them out. The country of Israel has tried to live in peace with her neighbors. They’re not the ones advocating mass destruction and death, it is terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbolla. They have invaded countries like Lebanon and used neighborhoods as a weapons platform to launch rockets at Israel. But it doesn’t stop there. Countries like Iran call for the extermination (the genocide) of Israel. It is religious monsters like Bin Laden who raise children in camps to become living weapons.

This story sounds so familiar. I think there’s another country with exactly this same history, right down to the bulldozing of a well-established native people, and they’ll also be celebrating this achievement in a few months. Wildfire, I’ve gotta ask - if you’re really concerned about the plight of the Palestinian people, which is genuinely alarming, what in the world do you hope to accomplish by writing off Israel as an evil non-nation that deserves a wretched end? The State of Israel is a modern democracy with a free press, a vigorous judiciary, and a population that’s increasingly sick of playing the role of occupying power. But the country also faces very real constraints - it has to do something to ensure that terrorist attacks and missile launches don’t threaten its towns and cities. For the moment, occupation of the West Bank and intervention in Gaza seem the only ways to do that. What is your counter-proposal? Or do you believe that Israeli civilians - men, women and children from all walks of life - simply deserve to be bombed?

It’s 2008. Let’s face facts; most Palestinians are not trying to go back by this point - the overwhelming majority were born and have lived their entire lives outside of the current borders of Israel. The Palestinians want to claim a land that’s currently being occupied by a different people on the basis that it’s the homeland of the ancestors.
