My coworker, originally from Texas, asked me if we have “snow days/cold days” off at our workplace, a hospital. I laughed.
I live in Michigan, as I have for most my life.
Apparently, “cold” days exist. When I was a kid(I’m 30 now), we never, never, never, never, never, never got off school if it was “cold”. We got snow days, when the snow was too thick to get the buses out, but never cold.
I am now a teacher. We had one cold day this year, none last year, and 2 two years ago.
It’s new. I guess the precious children can’t go out in the cold. It was -12 F when I woke up yesterday(a cold day), by the way.
Wimps.

When I left work at 3 a.m. Friday morning it was 3° F.
This is Kentucky. I’m not used to that much cold. It’s usually in the 20s. They did call off school on Friday for the cold. I can’t ever remember that happening when I was a kid.
Same here. I don’t remember cold days growing up. This past week, the schools were closed twice for “cold” days, and the university was closed as well.
Back in my day, the university NEVER closed.
I agree. Wimps.
Good god. I am in rural Alberta. In December it hit -57C with the windchill one early morning. We had a deep freeze for a couple weeks, it stayed well into the -30C. The last few days it’s been down right summery, +5 C and sunny.
Schools close now because of potential liability suits more than because there is real worry about children & frostbite. I, too, remember walking to school when the snow crunched underfoot. Maybe I have become wimpy as I got older because I try to stay inside now. Today, I broke a sweat clearing the snow - it was 19 degrees when I looked. Whoa - heat wave.
Some clown from Florida or Hawaii or Arizona is bound to prance into this thread and dither on about how the sky is clear, the birds are twittering and it’s an achingly perfect 80º Sunday. Of course, I would never dream of being such an insensitive twit.

It was so cold that Friday and Saturday morning, the thermometer in my car (hanging from the otherwise-useless cigarette lighter) wanted to jump in my coat and come inside with me.
Saturday’s official low at Dulles Airport, at 6 AM, was zero degrees F.
My house, without the heater turned on, was 78F a few days ago. I love Cali
You people are IN SANE.
Well it’s mid-30’s here (Celcius!), which is somewhere in the 90’s F. I’d be happy to send some heat your way …
Now, now…you’re exaggerating. Does this look insane?
At least we have a tiny bit of snow (< 1/8") to show for it. I hate it when it’s well below freezing for a few days, only to be followed by rain. And we haven’t received a decent snowfall in at least two or three years. Oh, there has been the occasional forecast for a few inches, but it usually turns out to be rain. Very depressing.
100F here at the moment and I’m in shorts with the air conditioner on waiting for the sun to dip so I can go in the pool.
I think I’ve experienced a record low of 60 F here in my area. Burrr…
What, you’d feel better if the entire northern half of the US suddenly moved to the southern half?
A little below-zero each winter is worth living in this wonderful area. And it’s up to 14 degrees - hooray!
It has never been that cold where I live. “Bitter cold” sets in at about 45 around here.
