Trump’s heavy-doom-and-gloom resonated more than Clinton’s “we’re already great” (I know, that was Michelle Obama’s speech) because doom-and-gloom is what a majority of people are actually experiencing economically.

Yeah, this election, those who were economically struggling were looking for someone to say “I feel your pain”; and Trump came closest to doing that.
