So next Sunday we get two Italian High school students (grade unkown, but probably the equivalent of juniors or seniors), male, who will be staying at our house for about a week. They are from what is Montepulciano, in Tuscany. Anyway, we want to make their stay enjoyable. Anyone have any advice on how to be a good host for one week? What kinds of foods would they probably enjoy, or find as treats that we have here, but would be less common there? What about things to do in the evenings? What would they find edible in the bag lunch we have to fix for them each day? Any advice would be helpful. I plan to just treat them as a part of the family for the most part, but also would like to have things that they would enjoy but that I might not think of.
Take them to eat barbeque. That is something that they will probably never have had. Maybe an American Football game as well.
My experience of Italian exchange students is (ages 11 - 20), sadly, is that they tend to want to eat pasta and pizza … and then complain at the quality :smack:
Seriously don’t be disappointed if they are not overly adventurous, or complimentary, on the food front.
For breakfast they’ll expect a milky drink - coffee or chocolate (Italians are shocked that we drink Capuccinno after 11 in the morning !) - with bread and nutella (chocolate/hazelnut spread) or some sort of croissant like pattisserie. I’m sure muffins will do the job
For the rest, including the packed lunch) just eat what you’d usually eat but make sure that they have a chance to eat a pasta dish and get their hands on a pizza at least once during their stay.
The Barbeque sounds like a good idea, as does the football game. Do steroetypically American things, and anything specifically local too - and show interest in Italy.
(Sorry if I sound harsh talking about their possible reactions towards the food but that’s my experience - of ‘grown-up’ Italians too even when faced with my Mum’s home cooking  )
Having been to Rome and eaten the Pizza there, I can’t believe they would enjoy the stuff we have here. Anywhere in Rome I ate Pizza it was better than anything I have ever had over here. Unfortunately, every pro sport is out of season, so that is out. I will think of something interesting to do with them. It was the food thing I was most concerned about.
