I have a friend. Actually a family friend who lives in San Diego, although he grew up in Brooklyn.
I was out west on business a few weeks ago, and we got together for dinner. Talking about food and such, he commented that the one and only thing he can’t find out there are the kinds of italian ices he remembers from growing up back east. He’s particularly fixated on chocolate and orange flavors.
On my return to Boston, I have been scouring the internet and grilling friends, but no one has any clue, so I turn to you guys
Does anyone one know of a company who still makes “Classic” italian ices? Ideally, someone who can pack and ship a carton or two?
Aside from the old school ones that appeared on “Ice Cream Trucks” every summer when I was little, there are now “Rita’s” Italian Ice store around in Pennsylvania. Maybe he’ll have some luck with that.
Does he mean the ones that came in the green container? I grew up in Queens, and we got them from ice cream trucks, but they sold them in grocery stores when I lived in New Jersey.
Even better Italian Ices were sold from stands in the summer. They were softer, and were sold in little white cups. I’m a lemon fan myself.
Yeah; the little cups that came with the paper-wrapped wooden “spoon”
Gorgon A friend from Philly also recommended Ritas; they seem to be an east-coast thing, and their website doesn’t provide any sort of on-line ordering option.
I flagged down an ice cream truck today to see if we could work something out.

Perhaps your friend is craving Ices Queen, a great place that’s still on Utica Ave in Brooklyn. Wonderful ices, much better than the venerable Ices King of Corona (imho).
