That’s an interesting list, I’ll have to back and relisten to some of them.
Back in the 80s when I was in high school, I worked at a 1 hour photo lab in Yorkville. For those not from the Centre of the Universe that is Toronto, Yorkville is the fanciest part of downtown where the Rich and Famous hang out.
Most of the staff were in their earlier twenties so we tended towards university radio station type of music and one of the discs in regular rotation was Mary Margaret O’Hara. We had it playing one day when her older sister, Catherine O’Hara, came in with some film to develop. One of my co-workers rushed to turn it down out of some misplaced Canadian embarrassment but Catherine encouraged them to turn it up. It was a great album.
Canada’s greatest band has at least nine songs that are specifically named after Canadian places (or geographic concepts)
Cemetery Sideroad
In Sarnia
Goodnight Attawapiskat
Speed River
Skeleton Park
Toronto #4
Bobcaygeon
At The Hundredth Meridian
Three Pistols
Of course, the number that MENTION Canada, places in Canada, or Canadians is beyond counting.
Once place the Tragically Hip never once actually name? Their (and my) hometown, Kingston, though that’s where Skeleton Park is.
I think it is 158th (assuming Centennial Day, 01/07/1967 was correctly named). As it happens it is my son’s 58th birthday.
(That post was 3 years ago. )
Oh, sorry for that. That was my son’s 55th birthday. Happy 158th!
At the little television station in Virginia where I work, we devoted one of our regular general-interest segments to celebrating Canada Day. One of our weather guys just got back from Canada (which I assume is the only reason we bothered doing this down here in Virginia), and he brought back some Canadian delicacies like ketchup chips and maple cream cookies for our panel to sample. I guess a nice plate of poutine simply wouldn’t have survived the trip.
