It's Dead Skunk Season

25 minute drive to work this morning.

Dead skunks-8
Dead squirrels-2
Dead possums-1

Im in LA; here was my scorecard this morning

dead gangbangers-5
dead texters-3
dead bikers-2
and a dead pedestrian in a pear tree

Dead skunks? Hell, I have live skunks. Got my boneheaded dog twice in three weeks.

(Y’all forgot to Hi Opal. What’s this place coming to, anyway?)

Yeah my boy just got skunked last week after 3 years “clean” (he had like 4 in one year before that!)

I’ve been seeing dead raccoons lately. No idea why more now than before. Perhaps it’s that the vultures are busy with other bounty.

I’ve also got very alive possums. They visit my grape vine and eat all the grapes. I don’t mind them cleaning my grapevine like that but the dogs go berzerk over it and try to climb the vine and the fence and sometimes succeed. Ugh.

I have a long long skunk vs dog story. I won’t bore you to death. Just as a warning: you will smell skunk for years!

You got your dead cat and you got your dead dog.
On a moonlit night you got your dead toad frog.
You got your dead rabbit and your dead raccoon,
The blood and the guts they gonna make you swoon.
You got your dead skunk in the middle of the road,
Dead skunk in the middle of the road,
You got your dead skunk in the middle of the road,
Stinking to high heaven.

For some rap music captures their life experience. This one captures my rural/suburban youth.

I think that meme departed along with OpalCat.

I opened this thread just to post those lyrics . . .

No need to be so fatalistic, as this is not correct, at least in my experience, and my skunked boy was a long-haired double-coated Bernese Mountain Dog who really got it good. The key ingredient to his salvation was Nature’s Miracle brand skunk odor remover from Petsmart or other major chains. It was not, in fact, actually miraculous as it may have taken two generous applications (can’t really remember as it was a long time ago) followed by thorough washing with dog shampoo, but he was good as new fairly quickly.

As for dead skunks, I didn’t know there was a “season” for it, but there was a particularly noxious skunk odor around the house recently (front AND back, so not sure what direction it was coming from) that persisted from early morning through to midday. That was about the worst I’ve experienced other than when the dog himself cheerfully walked into the house stinking to high heaven of Eau de Skunke, apparently quite proud of himself for having defended the household against Pepe Le Pew.

Yeah, we got all the smell out just fine. We used a combo of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and a dab of dish soap, followed by a bath with regular dog shampoo in the bathtub. I think the trick is to do it immediately, before the spray dries. Unfortunately, one attack was at 6:30 am and the other was 12:30 am.

Are you sure about the possum?

We thought we got rid of the skunked dog odor until we came home from Vacation and opened the door. Knocked us over. We had just gotten used to it. Finally we figured out the odor was inexplicably absorbed by an upholstered chair. Threw the chair out and that solved it.
