It’s a toasty 19 F here in the DC area. By some miracle, my apartment isn’t as frigid as it usually is. We’ve got the warm woolen blankets out for tonight, and we made a shopping run tonight.
The winter! the brightness that blinds you,
The white land locked tight as a drum,
The cold fear that follows and finds you,
The silence that bludgeons you dumb.
The snows that are older than history,
The woods where the weird shadows slant;
The stillness, the moonlight, the mystery,
I’ve bade 'em good-bye - but I can’t.
What kind? The ones with different colored toes? I love them. Once I wore 3 pairs of socks.
The weather page for the place I used to live in Canada said this morning that it was -7 F with a wind chill of -25. Jeezus! I remember cold like that (and not fondly), but it’s becoming a distant memory. Where I live now, it was 70-something this afternoon…
I love the look and romanticism of winter, but I admit I have a problem with chapped, bleeding hands, with nasal problems (all that dry air) and colds, with high energy bills (even though I keep the thermostat low), with shovelling snow and clearing off the car, and with winter driving… yet in spite of all that, I still love the season.
“…How she longed for winter then!
Scrupulously austere in its order
Of white and black
Ice and rock
Each sentiment within border
And heart’s frosty discipline
Exact as a snowflake…”
-- Sylvia Plath
It’s the coldest it’s been in weeks right now… somewhere around 43º.
I love the Pacific Northwest.
Heh. Am I the only Canadian who finds this statement extremely amusing?
I was hoping someone would ask!
No, they’re ankle socks, and they have little pink piggies on the top of the foot, and a fluffball in the shape of a pig’s head at the heel.
I love them
While it being warm would help, it doesn’t change the fact that you West-coasters have got my sweetie, and won’t give him back until Sunday.
Ah, I’'m going off to bed, or maybe a movie. Just get off this computer.
'Night, all.
::looks around::
::makes sure this is a Fucken Winter thread::
Hehahahaha. I’m dancing around nekkid because my sunburn is hurting too much for wearing clothes.
::d and runs away very quickly before they put the ice-hoses on me::
Well, it’s in the teens here and we’re supposed to get 6-10 inches tomorrow, but after I post this I’m going to finish my glass of shiraz and cuddle up in bed next to my boyfriend, with our cats on our feet. Bring it on, winter!
Sounds like you’re going to get 6-10 inches tonight too.
Okay, I officially volunteer to keep (at least) one of our esteemed Doperettes warm with my patented regimen of liberal doses of Cn’C (Cocoa n’ Cuddlin’). Who will take me up on this kind-hearted and oh-so-selfless offer? Anybody?
There’s twelve inches headed my way tomorrow. Damn. I like twelve inches . . . but only inside har, har, har.
I may have the formatting wrong, but I’ll go book as to the words being as I recall.
get a tv in your room, and go to bed a little early. I’m sure you have an electric blanket, crank that way up. I also have a down comforter on and those keep me toasty warm. I finally wised up and took the cotton blanket off and put on a new fleece blanket i bought at Shopko for $3. I’ll be nice and warm.
Now i go outside and shovel what looks like 8 inches of snow off my sidewalks before the cold temps hit. I hate winter.
You know, with this and the thread title, I was kinda thinking, "Yeah, I bet 6-10 inches of Aesiron would keep me real warm… Alll night long…
Five degrees this morning at 6 a.m. with predictions of 12 to 18 inches of snow. I walked a half mile the laundromat to do laundry before the snow hits. Now I have me and the clean clothes in my office with no idea when I’m leaving and how I’m getting home. I might just bunk here tonight–it’s warm, I have money to go across the street and get some food, and I have the Internet.
I’d probably find it more amusing if I didn’t have to whip out a calculator to figure out what it means.
BTW, I’m on my bicycle today. And tonight too, when I go into work. Probably be 30 cm of snow out there. Yippee!
And next week, I’ll be in sunny St. Martin, enjoying clothing optional beaches.
