Normally, I’m pissed when the phone rings and it’s a recording from a politician telling me who to vote for, especially so when I have turpentine and oil paint on my hands, but today I got to curse out Bill and Rudy and a few others, so it felt all right.
Ring!!!
“This is Bill Clinton, and I’d like to remind you–”
“Oh, yeah? Fuck you.” SLAM!!
RRRRing!!!
“This is Ed Koch–”
Ed Koch is an often kindly eccentric ex-Mayor, as opposed to the tyrant Guiliani. I’d be hard pressed not to tell Guiliani “Fuck you” or “Drop dead” if I met him in person.
I was once a democrat on Staten Island. During every single election we’d get scads of calls from both parties. At one point I monitored the robo-calls and determined we’d gotten 15 in a single 24 hour period.
I was annoyed enough to wait on line at the Staten Island ferry to meet Giuliani. The was one of his favorite haunts to troll for votes and praise. He saw me and leaned down (I am very short). I said in my firmest voice, “Stop calling my house a hundred times a day! I’m a democrat and I am not voting for you!” I had just enough time to glimpse his atonished face as I made a run for the ferry all the while expecting a secret service agent to catch me and throw me off the boat.
Naturally when I returned home there were five more calls from his campaign on my answering machine.
