By my recollection, it’s been over 90 for 26 of the 29 days this month. Today is the 18th day in a row over 90, tying a record that’s going to be beat tomorrow. And extended to at least the mid 20’s before we even have a chance of stopping the streak. It is 99 right now (2PM, in Denver). The forecast for tomorrow is 99, 102 on Friday and 100 on Saturday.
Average highs in Denver for right now are 84. To make matters worse, we had a ton of snow in the mountains last winter, which means lots of new underbrush in the forests, and all this heat with no humidity means fires. I don’t know how we’ve escaped so far. Probably because we haven’t had the afternoon thunderstorms and lightning that we used to get in years past.
I work at home and normally wear shorts and shirts so I can keep the house at 75 degrees with the A/C running for maybe an hour a day. This month it has been running all day. I got my electric bill on Monday but I haven’t opened it yet because I don’t want to see what it is.
Can you please send some this way? Honest to God this has been the shittiest summer I can ever remember here in Ontario. It’s been cool and has fucking rained almost every day for the entire summer. I think I mentioned it in a thread a week or so ago, but Jesus it’s been terrible here. I’m on vacation next week. It better warm the fuck up.
I’ve jokingly told people that I have the opposite of SADD. I loathe the summer months. Too much light and heat. Rumor has it that we might be getting some rain here in a couple days. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Anything that kills the sun for a couple hours.
Same thing here in da UP. It was 63 degrees out in the middle of the day last week. We’ve had maybe one good beach day this year.
That said, it’s kinda nice not to be sweating my ass off in in my non-air-conditioned office every day, and mid-60s to mid-70s are great temps for biking. So it’s not all bad.
Actually, this summer has been great in Southern Ontario. The lakes are full, the gardens are lush and green, the trees don’t have that parched look to them, we haven’t hit 40C at all… do you remember summer a couple of years ago when it basically didn’t rain for three months?
Only problem is, the mosquitoes are carrying off small dogs.
Yesterday at lunchtime it was 102 degrees in my kitchen. Fans blow the hot air around, but being inside a convection oven feels pretty much the same as being inside a regular oven. They say that if you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen, but the rest of the house is not much better. During the heat of the day, our dogs and cats lie around like dead things. I am a zombie woman with a houseful of zombie pets. And we are all too exhausted and listless to eat any braaaaiiiiins.
This is the first summer in several years that I have evaporative cooling instead of AC for my home. Evap cooling does not work very well during the monoon season (end of June thru first of September) when it’s humid, as it is now. My car’s AC broke a few weeks ago. I’ve never sweat so much in my life. I never thought it was possible to sweat as much as I have this summer. OH HOLY OG I wish it was fall right now.
I have said the exact same thing! I say I have reverse SADD because I get all giddy when it’s rainy or snowing or cold and want to close all the curtains and hide in a funk when it is sunny or hot.
[This is why I moved away from Tucson at age 25, and why I love living in Cleveland now.]
The only time I really get weirded out because it’s too damn sunny is in June. June is so freaking hot and sun sun sunny every day, that by the end of the month, when the monsoon is rolling in, when you wake up and it’s cloudy, it’s actually cause for celebration. I’m always like, “Woohoo! The sky is NOT sunny! For once!” I hate June because it is just too sunny and hot.
Your use of the word “actually” makes it sound like it would otherwise be unbelievable. For me, ANY time I wake up and it’s cloudy it’s cause for celebration–especially when I lived in Tucson.
