OK maybe rain doesn’t sound like a noteworthy thing in Ireland, but japers it has been bucketing down the last couple of days. I’m about to go for a wander in it. Wish me luck!
Have fun.
I’m sitting on a picnic table, surrounded by orange, yellow and green-leaf oaks. There is a slight breeze, and the rustle of a dozen large trees and the cackle of acorn woodpeckers is just about the most relaxing sound I can think of. It’s 60 degrees in the sun, not a single cloud. I have a fresh cup of mediocre coffee, and all is well in my world, at least for the moment.
If it wasn’t for the lawnmower in the distance and two women sitting at the table behind me talking about lesbian sex, it would be an absolutely perfect fall day.
I’m in Dublin and made the mistake of going for a long walk while the rain was only a mist. I got back to my hotel with soaked jacket, pants and both shoes.
But no biggy, I got changed (all dry but the shoes) and went to the hotel bar for the afternoon/evening.
The ride over last night was interesting. I came from Galway area and encountered some pretty wet roads.
Back in NH tomorrow, with (according to NOAA) rain likely on Wednesday
I just had to move my car to what is only a slightly higher patch of the road. There is a foot of water now in my estate, and it is still raining. Getting a bit worried about damage to the car here, and its only a few more inches until we are looking at house damage also.
The roof of Superquinn was leaking but not so much rain where I live. I hear the Dundrum Centre is getting a wild doing and that the Poddle has broken its banks.
Yeah, it was evacuated earlier. I wasn’t down at the shopping centre, but I do live in Dundrum and the level of water is unreal. It does seem to be easing off a little, but I hope it isnt just a momentary calm.
It is 79° F at this moment, which ties the all-time high for the day. Tomorrow afternoon it will start to rain, and turn to snow overnight. Wednesday will be all snow with up to 10" in my area. Yea. Glad I got the lawn mowed and fertilized yesterday.
We had 28 inches in August (SE Alaska), it was terrible. I always figured we were pretty close to Ireland for temperature and precipitation, but I never really took the time to look up the yearly totals.
Reminds me of my time in Cork, when after three straight weeks of rain I asked my coworker if it ever stopped raining in Ireland.
Grainne’s response (sorry for the lack of a fada) was “Why do you think we have forty fucking shades of green?”
Seriously lads–stay safe. There’s a reason we say “come hell or high water.” You can’t do a damned thing about either of them.
My best wishes to you. Slainte, in its literal sense.
Here’s a link with some videos and photos.
Sweet fuck.
I was flabbergasted when I saw Patrick’s Street in Cork underwater a few years ago. This is something else.
An Gadai, I have some friends who live up off of Grove Park (just off of Grove Road and the canal). Unfortunately, they live in a basement flat. Any idea what’s going on up that way?
Either way, stay safe.
Small world, friend of mine lives on Grove Park. I dunno what things are like there but basement plus proximity to the canal sounds like they could have problems. I know some basement flats in South Dublin have been flooded.
Small world, indeed. I don’t s’pose his name is Eoin F____? From Waterford?
Anyway, I think my man has some sense and some ability. I hope they see him through.
I’m agnostic, so I won’t be praying for you. But I’ll be thinking about you both (and your friend) tonight, and wishing you health and luck.
Take care, lad.
So that’s where the rain ended up. It rained every day here last week, and the river’s full up. Still haven’t gotten all of the water out of the cellar yet, either.
Glad to see you haven’t drowned. This year, Spain’s mediterranean coast has skipped over most of its early-fall storms, but we’re now having heavy rains over most of the country. Since this is the kind of place where people go into Moron Mode as soon as there’s clouds, even for our rainy areas, we’re having a lot of fun.
Well, mostly those of us who don’t need to drive and can just commiserate with those coworkers who need to… mwahahahahaha! One of mine has the theory that a lot of the trouble is caused by “Sunday driver” types who, instead of saying “oh no, it’s raining and I can barely drive, I’ll take the bus!” go “oh no, it’s raining, I can’t let my jacket get wet on the way to the bus stop, I’ll take the car!”
It’s kinda sunny today. Such peculiar weather. It seems at least two people died in the flooding.
I live in Harold’s Cross about a three minute walk from Grove Park. Walked by it today and it looked OK. I cycled home in it last night and part of it was like going through rivers except these were main roads
A off duty cop directing people away from a suspect bridge was washed away and killed and a woman died in a basement flat. Bad shit.
Rain has stopped now. Luckily I live on a bit of a hill as this is about 100m from my house.
This is a crazy photo, looks like the floodwater has undercut a cemetary in Howth:

Glad your gaff’s all right man. Up here in salubrious North Dublin there wasn’t much. I went out for a walk in the rain and it was quite pleasant. I bet the Old Airport Rd. and environs were flooded but drop a bottle of ballygowan there and it floods. So glad I can work from home a lot of the time. Getting home from Clonskeagh last night would have been a nightmare.
