It's Rankin-Bass Christmas Program Time Again! Wooooooo!

Oh yeah. I cannot get enough of the funky puppets.

Right now, I have no cable. So, I cannot gorge myself on the Fox Family Channel’s “25 Days of Christmas,” where they show every flippin’ one of the Rankin-Bass productions.

I already had Santa Claus is Coming To Town on video, but that’s the only one I had. But today was payday, and I had a mission. Begin the quest to collect all of them.

Tonight I picked up The Year Without A Santa Claus, which is my personal favorite. I can’t make it through a year without the Heat Miser and Snow Miser.

What’s your favorite Rankin-Bass special?

I have to go with Rudolph. Love that show.

Is the elf named Herbie, or Hermie? I always say “Hermie” because there’s a NASCAR driver by that name (who is one of my favorites, the big brother of my VERY favorite, plus my uncle works for him), so for years I’ve been tickled by “Hermie doesn’t WANNA make toys!”

Hermie. He’s Hermie. I like Rudolph, too. Ever catch yourself doing the “I’m CUUUUUUUTE!” thing when the opportunity arises? Most everyone over the age of ten laughs, because they know right where it comes from.

Damn, I love those shows.

I picked up Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and The Little Drummer Boy yesterday. Oh yeah. My collection is moving along nicely now.

Same here…it was on Family Channel last night and I was strutting around the room in time to “Heat Miser” lol. I didn’t realise there were so many of them, I guess they’re usually spread out more (the New Year’s one, etc.) They even had a few I’d never heard of. (“Jack Frost?” I could only watch a few minutes…too weird!)

I was thinking those were older than they are. Unless I’m reading the Roman numerals wrong (which is highly likely) they’re from the 1970’s, yes?

Rudolph is from 1964 or thereabouts.

If you haven’t seen it, keep an eye out for Nestor the Long Eared Christmas Donkey which doesn’t get as much play as some of the other Rankin-Bass shows. I go through about a box of Kleenex whenever I watch it, but it’s good if you like that sort of self-torture.

Well, infamously the credits from the opening of the Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer are way incorrect. They read "“MCLXIV,” which comes out to 1164. They should properly read “MCMLXIV”, for 1964.

I’m sorry, I don’t much care for Rankin-Bass, who think of as Rank and Base. Aside from the original Rudolph the Read-Nosed Reindeer, I haven’t much cared for their other Christmas Stuff. Or anything else of theirs. My fave animated chrstmas specials are **Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol ** (the first animated Christmas special), How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and a Charlie Brown Christmas (which actually managed to sneak a Bible reading into a kid’s special. Try to do that today. ry to even conceive of suggesting it.).

I absolutely love Rudolph. That has always been my favorite Rankin-Bass show.

Except for Santa. God, Santa Claus in “Rudolph” is an absolute prick. I always want to hit him in the back of the head when he criticizes the elves’ choir.

But other than that, the Rudolph special is the highlight of my Christmas television viewing.

I used to have all of them on tape, but they burned up when my house did. :frowning:

Silky, my stepson and I were discussing the Santa jerkiness in Rudolph just this evening, when we watched it. Hard to believe that Santa could act like such a complete loser!

That Mickey Rooney as Santa biopic: decency forbids me from relating some of the dirty lyrics we kids made up to replace “If you sit on my lap today a … is the price you’ll pay.”

Being the videophiles that we are, we have quite a collection.

The Year Without Santa Claus is probably my family’s favorite. The Miser Brother’s tunes are quite catchy! One of our favorite phrases around the house is “Boys, puuuuuhhhhllllleeeeeezzzeeee”!

We’ve been able to find most of them pre-recorded except for Jack Frost. Also, I will swear I saw a different version of The Little Drummer Boy than what’s being sold on VHS. I haven’t found that one either! We haven’t done any serious searching, we just pick them up when we’re out.

“Also, I will swear I saw a different version of The Little Drummer Boy than what’s being sold on VHS.”

There was actually a sequel to the first “Little Drummer Boy” done sometime in the 1970’s. All I remember about it is it only aired a couple times and Zero Mostel did one of the voices.

Maybe that was the one you saw.

Hah! Take a look at this thread, one of the funniest things ever to appear on the SDMB. Someone should really bump it as its that time of year again.

Also gotta go with Year w/o SC. Although everyone mentions the Miser Bros. (that’s the part I best remembered and the songs are great, w/Dick Shawn as the cold one), what really blew me away was the song “Mr. Klause” (Mickey Rooney again) sings to the little boy about believing in Santa. Made me tear up in a big way. Great show (though not included in the new DVD packages!)
