Rudoph vs. Year Without a Santa Claus

Hey. In a recent…interesting conversation with Jester, we came to the conclusion that puppets have taken over Christmas. I mean, look at all of them…too many to name. And of course, la creme de la creme:
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

However…there is a new rival against Rudolph. Which would be- The Year Without a Santa Claus. There’s a huge thread right now about Rudolph which goes into great details, and a small but growing thread that goes into equal minutae about A Year Without a Santa Claus. Now I’m not a huge fan of this other TV special or anything, but it might be even campier than Rudolph. (Still, it lacks the heartfelt…ness of Rudolph.)

So, what do you guys think? From these two movies, which is the better? Let’s duke it out.

  1. Which movie has the better reindeer?

  2. Which Santa Claus do you prefer?

  3. Which Mrs. Claus is better? (Do you prefer Mrs. C with black hair or white?)

  4. Who’s better- Snow/Heat Miser or The Bumble?

  5. Which has the better elves?

  6. Which movie has the cornier songs?

All right. Put your reindeer antlers on. Get your pointy elf shoes out. Kitschy Christmas movie duel!!!

  1. Which movie has the better reindeer?
The only reindeer I remember from YWASC is Vixen, so Rudolph wins, because Clarice is better than Vixen.

  2. Which Santa Claus do you prefer?
YWASC is better than Rudolph. Santa in Rudolph is an ass. But Santa Claus is Coming to Town is best.

  3. Which Mrs. Claus is better? (Do you prefer Mrs. C with black hair or white?)
Again, YWASC, because Rudolph’s Mrs. C pretty much spent the movie just saying "Eat! Eat!"

  4. Who’s better- Snow/Heat Miser or The Bumble?
The Bumble. But Winter Warlock and Burgermeister from Santa Claus is coming to town are better.

  5. Which has the better elves?
    Hermey beats what’s-their-names, no contest

  6. Which movie has the cornier songs?
The only song I remember from YWASC is the Snow Miser/Heat Miser song, so I have to vote for Rudolph.

wanders off singing “It’s a difficult responsibility…” from Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Coolness, Kat, you were the first to respond to my oh so beloved thread. Thanks.

is your sig line from the 20 questions game?

I haven’t seen AYWASC since I was about 8, and really don’t care to see it again. But Rudolph - that movie kicks ass. I watch it every year! It wins hands down.

I don’t really have an opinion of any of the question you asked, but AYWASC kicks Rudolph’s little pansy ass all around the North Pole. You can’t top the Snow Miser/Heat Miser theme songs, complete with little misers in top hats.

You’re welcome. And yes, it is. I was playing it the night after my sister gave me an Ultimate Apple and decided to play using “a caramel apple” as the answer. That was one of the bits of Spontaneously Generated Information that popped up after the game (I won).

All right I’m a dork, but I’m responding to my own questions. I wanna keep this thread going!

  1. Which movie has the better reindeer?

Obviously, Rudolph. Though as Jester pointed out, its a reindeer focused movie. Still, the reindeer in Rudolph are more intellectual, can talk, can fly more gracefully, and have “real” emotions. They can express their needs and desires, and oh yes, they can sing. They also don’t make monster sounds.

  1. Which Santa Claus do you prefer?

While the Santa Claus in Rudolph has balls and is a tough old bird, the Santa in Year Without…is pathetic and a bit whiny, I think. Rudolph wins again.

  1. Which Mrs. Claus is better? (Do you prefer Mrs. C with black hair or white?)

I’m going to have to say Year Without…this time. In Rudolph, she’s nice but a bit shrill. In Year Without…she’s more nurturing.

  1. Who’s better- Snow/Heat Miser or The Bumble?

The Bumble is definitely scarier. Snow/Heat Miser are charismatic enough, but they won’t make you piss yourself in fear. Not that the Bumble made me do that…

  1. Which has the better elves?

Rudolph of course! Hermie has the depth of personality, and the cute blonde hair, that Jingle and Jangle lack. Plus he has high aspirations. He wants to break free of the mold to be a…dentist.

  1. Which movie has the cornier songs?

The Year Without…b/c Rudolph’s songs are from the heart. They aren’t contrived, they’re real and sincere. They bring a tear to one’s eye. Sigh…
