It's summer and a Melon Lovers Dream - you interested?

I just cut a slice of Watermelon that I’ve been eating on for a week. Cut off the rind, cut into chunks, and placed in a bowl. A sprinkle of salt and I’m happy.

Melon lovers have many choices Watermelon, Honeydew, Crenshaw,Casaba, Cantaloupe they all good.

What’s your favorite melon? You prefer it ice cold or room temp?

Hope I got the majority of melons in the poll. Some of them I hadn’t heard of before.

I loke my melon cold. I wany some right now and I have none.

Stopping by a local farmer’s stand on the way home yesterday, I noticed a pile between the cantaloupes and watermelons: Canary Melon. The exterior looks very much like honeydew, but bright effing yellow. I plan to cut into it tonight, see how it tastes.

Watermelon’s good, but the seeds are annoying. Even the “seedless” ones still have those little white ones. I hate that shit.

Cantaloupe, crenshaw are all pretty good, and I’ve never had a casaba.

But a good ripe honeydew is the greatest thing ever.

Mmmmm… ice cold watermelon, sometimes with a sprinkle of salt, sometimes not… my favorite!

I like cantaloupe, can tolerate Watermelon (but too many seeds) and do not like Honeydews at all. I don’t know if I have ever eaten Crenshaw or Casaba.

Cantaloupe with cottage cheese salt and pepper. Nectar of the gods.

I like watermelon pretty much best of all. (I just read somewhere that whatever it is in watermelon that is good for you is increased if it is at room temperature. Which is ridiculous because on a 90 degree day I want it cold, of course.)…I also like a nice sweet cantaloupe, but there’s so much of it, and if I get a dud, I’m stuck eating a blah one. (The only sure sign of ripe I’ve found is looking for a little depression on the stem end - if there’s any stalk whatsoever there, that melon has been untimely ripped.)

I bought a melon called Lemondrop, and it had a sort of lemon-y tang to it. Not bad if you squeeze lemon juice on your melon. I want to buy a Santa Clause melon next, just because of the name.

I’ve had canary melons a couple of times, and they have been delicious. They’re quite sweet, but with a bit of tang to them, with similarities to both cantaloupe and honeydew. I need to remember to watch for them at the market; I don’t see them very often.

I answered “watermelon” on the basis of a typical sample. I like a top-notch honeydew better than a watermelon of equal quality, but the average watermelon is better than the average honeydew.

Regardless of the type of melon, I prefer it at room temperature with no salt, lemon, or any other additive.

I love sweet cold watermelon… however I don’t get the salt part.

I answered cantaloupe. A good watermelon is delightful, but I can’t stand it when they’re grainy and bland, which seems to be half the time.

I’ve never had anything but watermelon, cantaloupe (called mushmelon around here) and honeydew. The others I would be leery of buying because I wouldn’t know how to pick a good ripe one. I’m solid on picking watermelon and mushmelon, but honeydew are a crapshoot. I’ve never learned to pick good ones.

Salt on melon, any melon, is sacrilege.

All of them, please. As long as they are ripe.

Thank you.

I’ll go with Honeydew from my youth. Though Hand Melons (a particular type of canteloupe) are pretty good, if hard to find.

But salt on watermelon? <shudder> That’s absolutely disgusting.

A pinch of salt makes watermelon taste sweeter.

I try a few bites and see how sweet the watermelon really is. If it’s a really good sweet melon then I don’t add any salt.

Thanks! That’s a great trick to know… it’s so difficult to pick out sweet n ripe watermelons especially off season.

Just bought a watermelon today for 8 bucks.:smack: When I was a kid a truck would come by and you could get 4 for a dollor. I like it at room temp with salt. Once the rest of it is cold I don’t use salt.

I cut it up tonight and had some. And yes, there are similarities to both honeydew (which I love) and cantaloupe (which I don’t). All in all, it’s quite enjoyable, and I doubt it’ll be my last (should I ever find it again).
