It's that time again, ask the Starbucks Barista anything

How often does coffee get thrown at the employees?

How often do you get somebody taking money out of the tip jar and trying to pay with it.

Do they actually pump in an added coffee scent? I went into one just to use the bathroom - it was a store where the bathroom was near the door - and I came out smelling like coffee. Does just real coffee do that?

What’s the most annoying order you’ve heard? I don’t mean a difficult customer, just someone being pretentious or dumb.

My drink is a no water, iced Venti Americano. Is that supposed to be 5 shots or 4? The location near my old job always used 5, now it seems I get 4 everywhere else.

I am currently enamored with the “Chocolate Truffle Espresso” drink. When I asked what was in it at the counter yesterday, I was told 4 kinds of chocolate & it uses milk instead of water.

What I really wanted to know is how to make my own at home.

Do tell?

I have only heard of somebody throwing a drink at an employee once. I am one of those people that would loose it if it ever happened to me.

As far as stealing money from tips to pay for it, never. Usually they just grab them and run off. Thats why we try to drop them so much. I actually work in a very bad area, this happens a lot.

Sometimes people take their coffee in the bathroom and pour some out, i think they think we will be mad if we see them do it but we really don’t mind. Some people just want more room in the coffee. All the smells are real. They wanted to do away with the warming oven because it took away from the coffee smell.

It would be an Iced Venti Caramel Macchiato with extra caramel and 6 shots and a splash of half and half between each two shots. She also wanted to watch you put the caramel in and would tell you when it was enough. She then stired the drink up after it was done.

Ok so heres the thing. The regular mocha (chocolate) that we use is a powder that we mix with water this makes the mocha syrup. Then we add a few pumps of it to milk and you get a hot chocolate. The Espresso truffle is made with a powder and gets added to milk which we then steam and put in a cup.

The explaintion they gave to you was a little misleading while the regular mocha syrup is made with water its just part of the preparation. After all both coffee and tea are made with water. The espresso truffle mix does have 4 kinds of chocolate in it. As far as making it yourself, we don’t sell the mix but you are bassiclly drinking melted chocolate duilited with milk

And back to customers that annoy you. Cell phones…do not talk on one when ordering this goes x10 for bluetooth users who have the bluetooth covered. Tell the person to hang on the person behind you is looking at me with evil eyes

Did they or are they going to discontinue the breakfast sandwiches? And can you tell me how they make the eggs that go in those sandwiches, such as the bacon gouda one? Their eggs are so good- much better than any that I’ve ever tried to make in the microwave. How do they do that?

Do they let you drink for free, or just at a discount? What about when you’re not working- discount? What about your friends and family- discount?

I think that lady was in front of me at the drive-thru this morning.

The breakfast sandwhiches come in the morning. We don’t know from where. When we come in the store all of our food is placed there in crates. We thing little elves do it. Starbucks must subcontract out to have all that stuff made. I still don’t know how they get all the food so consistent throughout the nation with contractors.

As for discounts.

When I am working and a half hour before and after my shift all the drinks I want are free. I get 30% off any merchandise (50%+ during holidays) as well as a free pound of coffee a week.

Now as for the other part of your question…regarding friends and family. NO! In theory, however if you were working and other people are working and they are cool enough that they wont snitch I can’t see anybody getting in trouble…Not that I have participated in such occurrences… I have worked at my location long enough and am respected enough by the manager that I can give out a free drink to someone if i think they need one and no one would bat an eye. People have been fired for giving out free drinks, I have been written up for it. (Simple Politics, was totally bogus). So hypothetically depending on whos working in “theory” every barista drink could be free as well as their SOs close friends and parents even if they don’t even come in with him. It a tricky situation yet so simple.

When you hear a partner ask another one for their number this is what they are doing.
Hope everything above makes since. My sleeping pill kicked in faster then i thought it would and am having trouble focusing. Last post for tonight!

My apologies. I’ve been in a stressful work cycle and am a little fried, sorry for the snark and the highjack.

No big deal. There’s plenty of pretentious-ness to snark about with Starbucks customers (and lots of the employees). I worked for Starbucks for six years (okay, more like 8, but it’s mostly a blur) and after I left I could hardly stand myself.

What’s easier for the Barista, asking for an extra-hot latte, or a 170deg latte?

How can I make a somewhat complicated drink order less annoying for the staff?
(Triple decaf grande no fat X-hot latte)

Why are some customers so rude to you guys? Even here in Canada, where niceness is supposed to be a national virtue, I’ve seen suburban soccer Moms sneer at barristas with rage when they forgot to add/not add whip.

If I wanted an ordinary coffee I’d ask for the Fairtrade blend of the day. It costs about £1.50 over here.

I was having coffee with my ex today and he ordered this disgusting camarel-cream-frappa thing. There was nothing really wrong with it - it just wasn’t to his taste, or indeed anyone sane’s. He took it back and got something else free - do you think this is acceptable? Or do people like that piss you off?

My cappucino was too cold too quickly. Is there any reason for this - is it a problem for coffee shops in general?

The best coffee is always when someone who knows how to make it does so in their own home, IME.

When are you going to go back to making espresso the REAL way?

You don’t go to Starbucks for coffee, you go for the “experience.” Look I’m a poor no-hoper slub, but I go into Starbucks and for five minutes a day I get to be a Yuppie.

I can honestly say, not only have I never had bad customer service at Starbucks, the BEST customer service I get is from Starbucks.

If they say “Room for cream” say “Yes, only fill it 3/4 of the way.” They’ll do it. Sure the coffee and cakes are overpriced, but it’s not like you don’t know that before you enter the store.

If i recall it should be 4, but a no water americano is just an icced espresso. So id just say 5 shots over ice

I would just say extra hot, extra hot is 175, regular is 165. Customers tend to think they are drinking hotter drinks then they are. We have a lot of people who want their drink 200 degrees. The really means 185. The milk actually boils over about that of course we call it out 200 degrees because thats what they think they are getting and it makes them feel powerful probably.

Look at the little boxes on the cop and say them from top to bottom with the size being between the shots and syrup box. If its an icced drink say it before the size. Customers who tell you the whole drink without saying the size or if its icced annoy the barista.

I really don’t know. its just coffee people…Its not that big of a deal. The people who freak out over little things. I think it is just because they hate their life and going to starbucks and being mean to the barista is the only way they can feel good about themselves.

I dont mind when people return drinks if they didnt like them. If they tell me they enve rtried it before i usually mention they are free to bring it back. Some people do this to get free drinks and we know who they are but we can tell the honest ones from the lying ones.

I dont drink caps so i am not sure how fast they normally get cold seeing how they are mostly foam i would expect them to cool faster then a latte. I don’t know

Am I the only person who finds the new trans-fat free “food” inedible?

It has cut down on both my starbucks bills & calorie consumption, but I still wish that I could get one of the old cookies.

Just how unhealthy is a grande, no whip, hot chocolate?

Do people stay at your store for long periods of time (hours and hours) on their laptops? If so, does this bother/annoy you or other staff/management?

I’ve spent upwards of 6 hours at a starbucks before with a laptop, for various reasons, a few times. I worry that the staff may get annoyed, so I try to order a food or drink every few hours to feel like I’m not just stealing floorspace.

I like them. I am glad we have them I don’t like serving fat people unhealthy things. THey are still not all the good for you though, notice most say reduced fat and not low fat.

370 calories, 16 grams of fat 40 grams of sugar for a grande with 2% milk and whip

Naw I don’t mind. The ones that need help connecting to the WiFi are kinda annoying to me but this may be because I used to work in IT.

Do you think of me as less of a man if I order a white chocolate mocha?
